Well, since my truck stalled out at a stop light (read my thread), I decided to hook my mechanical gauge to my motor.

I didn't have any Teflon to seal the threads, so I had a small leak coming from the threads of the gauge.

What I noticed when I started the truck was that my oil pressure needle was going nuts bouncing between 50 - 55 pounds at cold idle. Im not sure what to make of the needle freaking out like that, but I thought maybe it was because of the small leak at the threads.

Any insight?

It is possible that the small leak could cause the 5 degree variation. Try sealing the leak and see if it helps.

Maybe its the bypass on the filter causing the fluctuation. Thats if your filter has a bypass valve. I have had leaks from my guage and bypass setup and none caused needle fluctuation.

How is the pressure when the truck is totally warmed up and running for some time so oil is all warmed up too?

I didn't get a chance to check fully warmed yet. I'm going to retry it with some teflon to seal the threads.

what spin on filter are you using?

Whatever Jiffy Lube puts on.

I'm running the 5-30 high mileage non synthetic stuff.

Motor has a little over 277,000 miles on it.

ohh..

oil pump maybe...

if it still jumps around when its hot, try changing the filter to a good brand and see what happens. It is a cheap test.

How hard is it to change the oil pump on a 93?

go to an auto parts store and get a motorcraft filter.

stop using quick lube places.

go to a corner mechanic if you can't change your own oil.

I would do a search for that. If you have 4x4, I believe the motor has to be removed (or at least raised) to access the oil pan. I hope I'm wrong about this...

If I disconnected the 24" hose on my mechanical gauge and left the gauge on in place of the sender, is that safe, or should I be worried about something hitting the gauge and breaking it?

Have you done a warmed up test yet?

Wont get a chance till probably tomorrow or early saturday.

Thats why I'm asking if I can take off the hose and just leave the guage head threaded in. I dont want to heat it up and not be able to remove it until it cools off.

I guess you can leave it threaded in. I don't know if the vibration/heat will loosen it or damage it.
