Ok I Need Some Help

My 97 sport 4x4 has a new trany and new transfer case and the control motor is working fine.... that said. i followed the checks according to the link about ("2nd gen 4wd not working?") the front drive shaft wont turn once the t case is in 4high and if you jack up the front end the tires spin in opposite directions. SO CAN ANYONE ELSE OFFER up more advice or suggestions?????????? thanks in advance for the help

Is the 4 wheel drive not working? Because with the transfer case in 4 high or 4 low the front drive shaft shouldn't turn because the front driveshaft is essentially locked to the rear driveshaft. Also the front wheels should spin in opposite directions because it is an open differential. I don't think I really understand the problem that you are having.

So they spin as though they were making a turn instead of going forward...and the engine is off when the wheels spin?

hey guys thanks for the reply's and to make myself clear (sorry about that) the 4wd is not working i went ahead and replaced the t-case with the trans because i thought that was the problem but evidentally not so i went through the checklist n the previously mentioned post and the front driveshaft seams to lock in like it should and the front differential seams to be acting correctly so ... any other ideas?!?!?!? if i replace the front hub/bearing assembly could that be part of the problem?

How do you know that the 4wd is not working? I'm not doubting your judgement I just want to better understand the symptoms. Does the light in the dash illuminate? Your Ex doesn't have the locking hubs like the earlier Explorers. You have a live axle set up so the hubs are basically always engaged and the axle is always turning. Therefore I don't think that replacing the hubs would fix the problem. With the front end in the air and the car in 2wd drive can you spin the front driveshaft? If you can when you do that does one or both of the wheels turn?

first i understand and appreciate your questions and the help.Trust me the 4wd isnt working i jacked the truck up put it on jack stands and locked it in 4wd high and low and while the back wheels turn the front do nothing, ive tried the old lock it in 4wd and do a hard turn on pavement and you should be able to feel the truck "crab" if the front wheels are driving. like i said when the truck is jacked up off the ground and in 2wd the front drive shaft will turn when in 4high or low it wont which tells me the t-case is locking in so that leaves from the drive shaft to the wheels as a possible problem area. My question is ...on the "control trac" 4wd system are there any sensors or electronics that could be causing me this issue? i am replacing the wheel bearings and seals in the rear and both front hub/bearing assemblies tommorrow so i am trying to eliminate all the possibles ....ANY IDEAS or suggestions?

IIRC, In Auto, if you jack up all four wheels, the rear wheels will turn first about 1/4 turn or so, then the fronts should start turning as the Control Trac system sees that the front and rear driveshaft speeds are not the same.
(I haven't actually done this, but I remember Robert describing this a long time ago. I couldn't find the post. ) In a 97 Sport, you should only have Auto, 4wd High, and 4wd Low.

If the front shaft does not turn, it may be:

No power to the TOD clutch in the TC. See the Brown Wire Mod for more info.

Problem with the TOD relay or the GEM. The GEM is the computer that controls the Auto 4WD. The GEM sends a signal to the TOD relay which in turn sends a higher power signal to the TOD clutch via the Brown wire.

Mechanical problem with the TOD clutch in the TC. When ever the system sees a difference between the front and rear driveshaft rotation speed, it should try to match the speed of the rear DS by engaging the clutch.

Dog first and foremost thanks for chiming in as you can see ive tried alot something i also did was take the rear of the truck and jack up the rear in my garage figuring that if it did engage the front end would just move it along on the jack but no luck, it did however make a small surge like it was trying to engage but couldnt quite do it. is there somewhere i can find a visual breakdown of the electrical and electronics with a definitions or labels? im trying to find anything to help but thanks again... any other ideas??

From your descriptions it sounds like it should be working. Are you sure in "auto" and jacked up in the air that when you spin either tires that they're both spinning, wondering if maybe its a CV joint issue?

im sure its not working i will be replaceing the bearing/hubs in front today so im going to inspect the cv joints closely to triple check... any other ideas???

I would suspect an electrical problem. I wouldn't replace anything else until you rule it out. When you shift to low your in neutral with you foot hard on the brake pedal I assume? Do you hear any clicking from the driver side rear cargo area?

Wrong generation... There will be no clicking from the rear on his truck.

Hi Twisted,

GIJoe suggested the same thing I did above: Make sure you have power at the brown wire that enters the Transfer Case. There is a connector at the back of the TC. Probe the larger brown wire that goes directly into the TC.

If you have power on the wire, then it is a mechanical problem inside the TC. If you do not have power, then it is an electrical issue, we can help you track it down.

ok so here is the latest i went to the brown wire under the truck and it appears we have found a or the problem... when i used the multi meter to check voltage it fluctuated wildly???? is this normal? do i need a new G.E.M ? anymore info thanks guys

Actually it should pulse on and off rapidly. It is a PWM (pulse width modulated) signal that controls the amount of power sent by modulating the current.

Its sounding like a mechanical problem inside the TC to me.

well i hope you are wrong!!! LOL ,no in all seriousness the TCASE and trans were just installed new and the other tcase did the same thing so i hope it is something other than internal could it be the gem or a relay or something
