Hi all
first post, but have been reading for a few weeks. Good stuff. Just bought a 93 4dr as a knock around vehicle and decided to fix it up a bit. Did radius arm bushings and ias shocks, made a nice difference in ride and handling. Im thinking about springs now and have read some good things about OME. Can anyone comment on how compatible they are with ias shocks?
thank you

Hi, and welcome to the site.
You will get 2" of lift on the rear if you buy the OME rear springs. They will work with the Edelbrock shocks just fine, but how are you going to raise the front?

Firstly thanks for reply. It looks as though i wont be able to do ome springs. Im told by the distributor that they dont make any that would fit explorers before 96.
I was, btw, planning on raising the front with ome coil springs but i was told that doing that would negatively effect the camber and adjustments to the front axle height would be necessary. Im not sure i would open that can of worms even if i could get springs for my 93. So for now it looks like stock springs, unless someone has a suggestion. Im not looking for height, specifically, just a better ride.

Street,
You distributor doesn't realize that the OME springs will fit pre 95 Explorers. Maniak has a pre 95 Explorer and has a set on his truck. I think he put 150 coil spacers on the front coils. You can always get a camber adjustment aftermarket kit.
Why not send Maniak an email and ask him what he did on his truck.
Paul Gagnon also has OME's on his pre 95 truck.
DiffWackDaddy also has my old OME springs on his truck.

It can be done.

We use the OME-36 springs that are officially made for a 1996 XLT 4 door..

that doesn't mean it won't fit on our 1992.. It just means that we don't tell the person we want to buy it from that it is for a 1992.

You will find many things fit the explorer.. you just can't tell the people you want to buy from that it is for the explorer. They are usually just Jeep shops.

We also use WAR-153 shackles. This gives us 3.5" of lift in the rear..

For the front we use the Duff 2.5" lift.. This has drop brackets and longer springs..

We also use the f-150 coil spacers for another 1.5" of lift. This gives us a total of 4" of lift in the front.

You can lift the front about 1.5" and still get it aligned. Your alignment cost will not be the normal $49.. it will more likely be about $150 since they must use camber adjustment bushings.

You will find the trick with modifying the explorer isn't the lack of parts.. it is the lack of places that care about vehicles other than jeeps. Most places won't sell a part unless it says that it is for exactly your vehicle..

You this site to find the right part nubmers etc.. and then just order the parts.. don't tell them what it is for.. and you should be fine.

like silverado tow hooks... tell them they are for your dads 1999 old body style v8 1500 and you want the optional accessory tow hook kit... it is 30 bucks versuds the regular individual tow hook that is 40....wierd i konw but it works rthat way

wow! Thanks for all the great information. Looks like a set of OME springs is in my future.
Just a few more questions for you guys: My shackles, u bolts and front coils are pretty rusty and i want to replace them. As i said in earlier post, i dont want to raise the truck more then the 2" from OME springs right now. Are stock shackles and u bolts the best option with OME springs? What about those greasable shackles on the OME site? Are there any better options then stock coils with the 150 spacers?
Also forgive my starting a new tread earlier. This is the first forum i ever posted in, Ill get the hang of it eventually:)
thanks again

There are 2 ways to lift the front.. Spacers.. or new Coils..

There are 2 ways to lift the rear.. New Springs or Longer Shackles..

New coils can give you a better ride or a worse ride.. (it all depends on the quality of the coils).. f-150 spacers won't affect the ride much.. and will lift it 1.5"

Your stock shackles are currently 5.5" long.. The WAR-153 shackles are 8.5" long.. that is a difference of 3".. which is a 1.5" lift (your only lifting 1 side of the spring so you are only lifting it 1/2 the the added height)..
I believe they have a greasable shackles set that is the same width as the WAR-153 and is 5.5" long (its a jeep shackle :) ). If you get the OME springs you can reuse your old shackles or get the greasable ones.
For U-Bolts.. if your old ones are in ok shape.. you can reuse them.. otherwise replace them.. nothing special about them.. they are round u-bolts..
