Hey, I just found this place and so far I like it. I know this place will be good for me. I was on the internet searching for some kind of tranny troubleshooting and I ran across this site. Good work I must say.
I've been driving a 1991 XL(I think it's an XL, when I bought it, all the badges were gone) for about 3 years now. It's got about 200K miles, it's blue, 4 door, manual everything, It looks like crap but I've never had any problems whatsoever with the engine, it runs perfect! The only thing I don't like is the incredibly stiff suspension. Is that normal for explorers? Other than 30" tires on shiny new black wheels, it is completely stock.
But the tranny has always been kind of a pain in the butt. It's always been really hard to get into first gear, and then pretty sticky with most of the other gears. I replaced the clutch a year and a half ago, and that almost helped, but the other day something wierd happened. So I took the tranny out(which is a heck of alot easier the second time around), and what to my wondering eyes should appear, not a throwout bearing anywear. It had completely disentegrated. There was only a couple of ball bearings left over rattling around in the bell housing. There's not much left of the slave cylinder either. So I figured that's the problem.
So I guess what my question is, Are there any suggestions that you experts have that I can do while my whole truck is tore apart?
Also, I've noticed that many of you guys have done plenty of modifications to your trucks, and I thought you might be willing to give some suggestions on what I could do to beef up my ride. What do you all think about a solid front axle or should I stick with the wierd dual beam thing in the front for now? What do you all think is most important to do first, and is there anything that I should avoid?
Thanks in advance, Matt
