I've been out of working on my own vehicles since my old hot rodding days but recently have been re-born into the motorsports sport/hobby.

I have as a work car a 1992 Explorer 4.0 automatic 4x4. The original transmission had been rebuilt 3 times and failed each time and lost four wheel drive . I think it is the selonoid , not sure. Regardless, a friend on mine replaced it with a transmission from a Ford Aerostar and added my transfer case. Works good except it still doesn't have four wheel drive.

I drive it to work and it's ok but having been recently trail riding with some friends I'd like to make my Explorer trail worthy as well and still be a good highway car as well.

My first plan of attack would of course being able to trust the transmission.

1.What can I do to make it bullet proff or at least dependable?

2. What shoud I look for as far a sthe four wheel drive not engaging ?

3.Is there a kit etc. to manually engage the transfer case and by-pass the selonoid ?

Any input would be appreciated and remember I am re-introducing myself to working on my own vehicle here.

Thx,
Gonzo

look into the t -case motor and getting manual hubs to fix 4x4 if you want a bullet proof tranny upgrade to the v8

Is the T-Case tranny an Explorer tranny or a V8 issue item ?

Gotta be honest , if a V8 goes in with all new drive train , it will be Chevy full size Blazer.

Would prefer to go 4.0 with my tranny beefed up for simplicity and $$$$.

Thx for your reply.
