OK... BUT.... you posted that it shifts its LO. How do you know? That's what I am asking. Remove the shift motor and actually check to see that the motor is shifting as opposed to (my guess) watching for a light. Yes I understand what you are saying about the motor for range only but humor me so we can perhaps work thru this. I guess its your time, effort and money (parts) and its no fun under a vehicle.
Further.... I re-read your reply to my initial "request"... my "oops" .... your "test" at the end is great. That test suggests that it might not be a "ground" problem per se but that the "magnetic clutch windings" are "not very good"...
... although it could just as likely that the wiring travelling thru the case to the clutch is "shorted" somewhere.
The bad news is that appears to "major effort" to get at the clutch coil... :-(
