2004 Explorer XLT
Hi, just registered but been lurking for awhile... I acquired a full set of 285/70r/17 for near pennies on the dollar. My 04 XLT currently has stock 18s off a 2006 Ex with an offset of +44, and i have a 3" leveling spacer kit in hand. I'm looking to buy new 17x9 wheels to accommodate my new tires but I'm unsure of what offset to go for as inner sidewall clearance will be an issue with the stock offset. I honestly don't care if i'll need to trim anything from the truck, just need to clear the inside and still have turning range. just wondering if anyone has experience or a reference for anyone that's mounted this size tire on a 3rd gen. Thanks for your consideration and replies.

If at all possible use the 18" wheels

Sorry no info on that for sure yet but macniels has some 4 inch flare Baja fenders like 400 or so per pair.

Might be easier than trying to find offset that works with that tire in a rim you like.

Right now it looks like my street\ winter all around tire is going to be 265 75 r 16 it should be close enough to my "fun aggressive" set so that I'm not overly speeding on my way to adventure when I swap to them.

But I am curious how well they will fit in the rear the 285's

On my 2002 I used -6mm offset rims with my 265/75/16’s, this is with a 3” body lift and 2” spacer lift. I needed to secure back my front fender liners to stop rub at steering lock.

What do you have for rear inner clearance?

Clearance where? From rim to frame? Sidewall to frame? Tire OD to body?
Whatever ends up being closest to the inside sidewall of the tire
