Over active ABS.

Hello All ,

We I'm a newbee so I may have not searched the right words or phrase. But , the front brake ABS system always "works" each time I come to a stop. The truck tends to then pull slightly to the right. It never fails to stop but annoying. So far I hear it may be due to incorrect sensor voltage and the entire hub would have to be replaced./......errr. The next thing I found was the option to remove the ABS fuse. Well I opted to do that and found there are several fuses located in different places for the ABS. Which one do I remove and where is it !!
and yes I realize I lose the function but I am willing to give it a try.

It sounds like you may have a dirty or bad ABS sensor on the driver side?

If you have a pick 'n pull junkyard near you, you can replace just the sensor if you're careful. Most buy-it-from-the-shelf junkyards will sell the entire hub itself.

Mine did the same thing, and I had a bad ABS sensor. Replacing it fixed the issue.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread into the stock 95-01 section. It sounds like the front sensors might have metal fragments caught on them.

Joe Dirt is right on. You've got a weak sensor. Your truck uses passive sensors. The sensors make voltage as the teeth on the tone wheel pass them, but they only make voltage at about 3mph and up. Below that they all kind of drop off, and your ABS knows its coming so it ignores the signals at low speed. When one gets weak it might drop off at 7, or 10 mph for example instead of 3 like the rest. While the others are producing signal and one is not, the ABS thinks that wheel has locked and starts to do it's thing. This makes the ABS event, and the pull.

My old 95 did that, when it would kick down gears when stopping, 2-1 or 3-2 whatever gear it was, the ABS would kick on, I know the feeling, it bugged the hell outta me!

And to follow up on my idea of taking out the fuse......that worked but , nope, not a good Idea.. I removed the 10A abs relay fuse which corrected my complaint. This also deactivated the speedo and the system detected a fault which turned on the CE light. So if I can get access ( on the ground ) to the abs sensors I'll work from there.

I think if must be faulty abs but apparently it is part of bearing and quite expensive,would like to be sure before I purchase one

I had the same problem on my '97. For a temporary fix, remove the 2 maxi fuses, 30 amp, #'s 5 & 6 in the power management box in the driver side engine compartment, check your owners manual for the location and fuse number. This will cause the ABS dash light to come on, but not effect anything else. I found the individual sensor part at Auto-Zone, for brake parts I like new parts, around $70. The link is for one company that manufactures them, you can search for your year, it is a different part # for 2WD or 4WD; 1997 4WD is ALS198. Getting the sensor out can take some time, be careful as it has a plastic housing.

It is 4WD, has the switch on the dash. Hubs are fine.
