I am not saying it can't be done..................

but yea, a big block fe is a bit overboard, and only a HUGE shoehorn is gonna get it in there.

How about just a tiny small block 302?

how about a 351ci Windsor or Cleveland? But I really want a 390 :D The stock pumpkin/whole drivetrain wont take a 390 will it? My mom had a 1985 Ford F150 with a 390 and she kept rolling the axles.

Do a weight comparison and I think you will find that there is a significant increase from the 390. This will create a stability problem and excessive wear in the front end.

:nono: I'm sorry, but that motor belongs in a 67 Mustang Fastback. :D

I would have to say no. The 302 is a tight fit, the 351W is almost impossible without a bodylift... an FE would require you to cut the front of the truck off at the doors and start over. Besides, FE motors are old tech..... you can get alot more power cheaper now with one of the various stroked windsors.

I'm with some of the other guys... 390s are great motors, but old school - heavy - and WIDE. I have built a couple - and some have made over 500 HP. They were fine for my F 150 but they are not what you want in an Explorer.

The 429/460 would be a much better choice - they are smaller, lighter, and make MORE power.

As for the rear axle - the 8.8 could handle the power, they are the standard engine for the F 150's, or you could stuff a 9 inch under there (I have a 9 inch and a Dana 44 from an early Bronco for sale).

I would rather build a good 302 - it would more than satisfy the demands for the Explorer... Take a 302 - put .40" shaved 351 Windsor heads on it - about a 290 duration cam - the Mustang GT fuel injection system and exhaust headers. That thing would roll... About 6000 RPM redline - hit really hard at about 3500 and pull all the way through.

James said it all. Note: the nickname for the FE series is FatBlock. They called it that for a reason.
