I looked at a few of the posts already and I didn't seee anything that was similar. I just got a 97 xlt and at 60mph I'm at 3000 rpm seems pretty far off to me. Overdrive button and light work. But dosent do anything. Could this be a speed sensor? Or did I get screwed over and am gonna need to start looking for a tranny for it? I've had alot of ranger but never an auto so the autos are all new to me. Could low fluid cause this? Also ita got the auto 4x4 but then it engages the rear end makes a hell of a bang. Would like to also address that and the rear end sagging a bit.

I had problem with the O/D light coming on and it was the torque converter. What I was doing was disconnect the negative lead on he battery too clear the code ,till I replaced the converter.

usually when the control trac tcases go out they make a bang occasionally. that said are you saying it bangs randomly, or it bangs going into 4l? what do you mean engages the rear? the rear is always engaged when ind drive reverse etc. as far as sag new springs AAL or load just shocks

Check the TSB for your vehicle, for that problem. For my year, it was a common problem.

The bang just sounds like it comes from the rear end when it's in auto and engages on its own. It's fairly loud when going into 4 low but not too bad. If I go from auto to 4 hi while moving its fine.

it shouldnt come from the rear since 2wd->4wd has no effect on the power sent to the rear. probably the tcase banging around down there. odd though since its the same when it engages 4wd vs you dong it.
