I’ve got a 2008 Ford Explorer, v6 AWD. Previously a fire marshal’s truck, so it has the “cop” style center console. The other day I was thinking about using the trailer and wanted to make sure I could get overdrive off. I pushed the button, and no indicator light came on to let me know it was off. Took it for a drive and it shifted into overdrive. I tried engine running in park, engine running in drive, engine running in neutral, engine off in park/drive/neutral…nothing. Is there a secret?? I’ve only owned trucks with manual transmissions so this is new territory to me. Is there a wire to look for under the shifter, is this a common problem? Thanks in advance for any help.

Well

First of all, check for any error codes detected.use forscan

Then, check the harness and the button (from the gear stick to the transmission module) for short cuts to voltage/ground and for the resistance.

You will need to find any suitable electric drawings for this vehicle.

Fixed the issue. After googling and some “down the rabbit hole” searches, I did find another member on another forum that was having the same issue. They said they replaced a circuit board, but didn’t say which it is. Googled “transmission circuit board” and found a YouTube video and how occasionally the gear shifter is stuck in park, the fix was also….a circuit board!! The video gave me a part number, ordered on eBay. Super easy install. Picture of the Ford part number.
