what kind of knoks does it make ??rattling or so??? I have some experience with knocking. Someday the valves started to rattle at acceleration but it was due to bad oil filter. Moreover strange noises from SOHC could be caused also by shot cam chain tensioners. It was also my case, so before you spend 2000 USD rebuilding the engine start from simple things.Archie

Yes, is it major noise or just what is becoming a common SOHC symptom? The SOHC has a known valvetrain issue, and caught early the repairs are cheap compared to a new engine.

well i am pretty sure it is a knocking coming from the bottom end not too sure though. it is a mountaineer that i bought for 300 dollars everything is there exept for the steering column and has a hole in the gas tank. so i had to hot wire it and pour just enough gas to crank it to see if it knocks. the guy told me it did. so im not really sure what it is. it has like 125000 miles on it so i would probably go ahead and rebuild it unless it could be an easy fix. thanks for the input

keep it coming

it is not loud and only can be heard if you get under the car that is at idle at least

i know that you can get a low mileage motor from $600-$850 from a junk yard.

yeah but unless parts are outrageous for these motors i can rebuild one for about that and be brand new jusnkyard mtors i dont like dont know anything about how it was treated

sounds like it might be more trouble then worth...

i would guess the nocking is from low oil and low pressure, has it been sitting a while?? the only way i could see to get a good understanding is to get it running until operating temp then go from there. have you had it at operating temp?

it hasbeen setting for about a year the guy said it was knocking when he parked it. no i have not got it to operating temp just cranked it and ran a min then off. other than that i havent done much else i bought it for parts for my other mountaineer because it has 176000mi but i am considering fixing it up everything is there besides sterring column good tranny. someone tried paint brushing the paint on that is on it but that is no big deal since that is my occupation the only thing wrong with it mechanically is the knocking

well i would get a steering column for it, get it running, then id see where you stand after that.
