My wife has a 99 Explorer Sport and she would like the overhead console.

Actually I am the one who wants her to have it..... She has terrible sense of direction and if she calls me and asks direction and can at least tell me whether she is going north or south it would be a big help :D

Anyhow from my searchs it looks like it can be done but what exactly do I need?

Also is there an auto-temp control that would go in her sport?

welcome to the site.

junk yards have them and you can also run a search for "overhead console" and you will find plenty of information. it will have the compass and outside temp gauge in the console. i have added one to my explorer and my ranger. if i'm not mistaken it is just 7 wires to hook up, but you will find lots of information for it as well as many other things.

I just got my Explorer CD from eBay, i wanna use it so i just thought i grab ya the wiring diagram for the overhead console. :)

Cool...

Now I just need to get the console..... what years will work with my 99'?

And also does that unit provide anything else besides temp and direction.

My trep gives me fuel economy and trip monitor.... and elapsed time.

where is the temp sensor located at?

malcro,
I second the idea about doing a search on here...you will find all the answers to your questions, as well as some very helpful tips. A lot of us have tackled the overhead console install!
You will need the console, temp sensor, console bracket, and wires and connectors to complete the job. Some of the previous threads have some good pictures too. The temp sensor is found attached to the radiator support...again, pictures are available.
The console will display temp and compass.
