Help. My 2001 Explorer Sport 4.0 SOHC has been overheating. Dealer has replaced T/S 3 times. Truck still overheats causing antifreeze to push it out of the overheat container. So much pressure that the overflow cap is blown open. Any suggestions to fix problem. Dealer can't seem to find the problem.

Have they chacked to see if the waterpump is actually working? I have seen the impeller fall off before. Also have them test the radiator cap. If it is not holding pressure the boiling point of the coolant drops, which will cause the vehicle to overheat easily.

yeah check the pump. i lost my drive belt before and every 5 minutes it would overheat. i didnt figure it out until i went to put belt dressing on the belt after i refilled the radiator, duh

It could be any # of things but considering its that new it does narrow it down a little.
But the bad thing is its building pressure which isnt a good sign.

Could be some of the following:
Blown Head Gasket
Cracked Head
Bad Water Pump
Fan Clutch (Not Likely)
Bad Radiator Cap
Bad Tstat ( Make sure they are putting the rigtht one in )
Cloged Radiator

Hope this helps but the bulding pressure leans towards Blown Head Gasket so thats not a good thing.
But it being as new is it is i would think that couldnt be it but you never know.

ALso does it overheat more while sitting or while moving.
Also does running the A/C make it any worse ?

Nick

Thanks for your help. I am taking the vehicle back to the dealer and have them check the water pump as you all suggested. Thanks again. I let you know the outcome.

oooh, the suspense is killing me! :)

2001 4.0 SOHC overheat

I was just advised yesterday that the dealer was able to duplicate the overheat problem. They advise me that the cooling system is developing a air pocket which is causing the overheat problem. They have not told me exactly which is causing the problem but they are putting in a new engine. Sound to me that" mum is the word" The problem I am having is that the dealer that is working on the problem is about 150 miles from where I live. So there is no face to face contact.

New engine?!?! Wow.
