Does anyone have any ideas where to start. I have seen these codes before on other vehicles but not an Ex.

Technical DescriptionEvaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (small leak)

What does that mean? This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

SymptomsYou likely won't notice any drivability problems.

CausesA code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
Other small leak in EVAP system
Faulty vent o-ring seal
Possible SolutionsWith a P0442, the most common repair is to:

Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

P0455 OBD-II Trouble Code
Technical DescriptionEvaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (no purge flow or large leak)

What does that mean? This indicates a fuel vapor leak or lack of purge flow in the EVAP control system. It means a large leak has been detected.

CausesA code p0455 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
Other leak or damaged piece in EVAP system
Possible SolutionsWith a p0455, the most common repair is to:

Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary

I was thinking the gas cap, but its probably not with my luck. I'm going to take a look at his truck and see what I can do. Thanks.

i had one of the mention codes. i did the gas cap thing and the check engine light stays off now. I do want to mention it looks like the part of the filler neck that seals againt my gas cap actualy has a slight crack in it. i expect the code to return eventualy.

Same problem on a '99 Explorer Limited 4.0L. Any ideas on where to start. The garage wants a cool $90 just to do the diagnostics and no guarantee that will find the problem.

I have a p0455 now on my explorer. I replaced the gas cap and, of course, that was not it. I ordered a vapor canister purge valve from rock auto to see if this fixes it. if not, there is a vapor canister vent solenoid that may be the problem. I've checked the hoses and do not smell any hint of gasoline anywhere this is why i'm hoping it is the purge valve or solenoid. the purge valve is 25 bucks, while the vapor canister vent solenoid is 75. The dealer charges 120.00 just to tell me what the problem is without fixing it. they connect a smoke machine to it and introduce smoke into the system through the filler neck. of course if there is a hole the smoke will come out.
