Not familiar with the 2001 model...

on my 97... was an evap leak from a loose vapor sensor which was hidden from view by the spare tire.

The leak can be so tiny that you may never find it by home mechanic means. BBQ may have you on the right track by looking at the evap system. The gas cap is part of that system. If the cap was off with the vehicle running that may be the cause.

The small leaks are a bit-- because you cant really hear them and blowing propane in he area doesn't make much difference. The only sure way I know of when all else fails is to find a shop with a fog machine. See what they charge just to tell you where the leak is.

I'd reset the code and see if it comes back. Did it happen shortly after putting gas in it?

I thought it was the cap but it was not, I checked a hose from the manifold to the valve under the battery and thought it was it so I cleared it and the code came back. How long is the second cycle take.

What do you mean by how long does the second cycle take?

I'm thinking he reset the PCM and wants to know how long before the code comes back. If ever, provably after the engine reaches operating temp.

My 97 had a badly rusted evap solenoid under the spare tire. About $35 from dealer.

Hey, opera house. I have minor issues and have been curious about this (ie; slightly hard to start, running as if there was a small vacuum leak, intermittent slight shaking etc...).

My '96 PCM doesn't detect problems associated with the EVAP system unless something is unplugged.

What symptoms tipped you off that you had a EVAP problem outside of the CEL.

Well over the weekend I changed a vacuum hose and the gas cap and I'm waiting for teh drive cycle to see if the check engine light comes back on. Thanks for all info.

I removed the solenoid. canister, and the mounting plate together. It was very rusted. Powering the solenoid with 12V produced no audible clicking. Some solenoids have an internal diode so I alwaus check polarity with something like a brake light in series. Proper polarity is when the bulb is dimmest.

Take off your gas cap and check the gasket on the gas cap.Make sure it's not twisted. Then look at the filler neck and look for cracks even hair line cracks. If you see any cracks use some clear glue and fill in the cracks trust me.Let the glue dry before putting the cap on.I did this to 2 Mountaineers V8 with small evap leaks causing the CEL and the light never came back on and now you hear the back pressure release when you remove the cap.Try this it's an easy fix the clear glue i used i found at Walmart for $1

So I am pulling the same code and this has been the third time in 6 months. I checked the gas cap, the gasket, and the filler tube. I am reading and see there may be an actual solenoid issue? Where is this solenoid located? I have the 99 XLT and the spare is under the rear comparment and needs to be cranked down. That said, when 'under the spare' is referrenced, where are you all talking about? Above the tire against the underbody of the vehicle or does the 97 have a spare in a different location? Any help would be great.

I think cleaning/testing and possibly replacing this may be a good place to start.

if your under the back of the truck and your looking up its above the spare. if you lower your spare tire down you will see it mounted up there.

hey guys, dose this small leak cause poor driveability or is it just an enviromental protection thing
