On the hood of my explorer I have what looks like cracked paint underneath the clear coat. Is there anyway to fix this besides repainting the entire hood?

Can anybody tell me what caused it?

I'd say to make it look good you're going to have to paint the whole hood

I guess so. What causes this cracking?

These are called spider cracks.
I beleive this happens from several possible things, if its flexing, get flex adhesive in the paint.
If its from some sort of bird-dropping, tree sap, or similar, on the car then you may be able to get it out by using Orange 4in LC pad with Menzerna Power Gloss
Or last, the paint may not have bonded properly in the first place...doubt that.

If they do not come out with the suggestion in the second possibility you'll have to get a new paint job.

How much do you "baby" the paint (wax, wash, clay-bar...etc)?

How long ago did you notice this, or it started?
