I have a 99 Mounty and I would like to paint the rims a matte black color. I want to make sure I prep them right so the paint lasts. I'm open to any advice out there.
These are the ones I'd like to paint. How should I prep them? Thanks in advance.
if they are clearcoated the clearcoat would have to be completely removed. you may want to consider having them media blasted. have you considered powder coating? i dont believe that paint would be durable enough for wheels. but either way you would have to scuff the wheels well enough to have enough tooth for the finish to stick to it.
Their going to be tough ones as those are coated rims. Is the aluminum peeling off at all?
If it were me I'b sand them down well with about a 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper, after I cleaned them well with a good cleaner. I'd them tape them off and give them a coat of primer. After that dried I'd probably give them two coats of paint, allowing drying time between them. After that 3 coats of clearcoat, drying between each coat would finish them off.
It would be a lot easier with them off the truck and the rubber off them.

I agree, take off the clearcoat w sandpaper, clean it, prime it, paint & clearcoat it.
I painted mine, buts its the teardrop design rims its been almost a year now and so far its holding up but make sure buy the rattlecan paint for wheels.
