Parents mad about mods

hmm, this post exploded... i'll answer a few things that came across my mind. I don't care if you guys say some harsh stuff, i can be an ass too ;). Whoever said doing stuf like cleaning maf, iac, rotating tire... etc is good to save money and learn about it, i totally agree and i love it. the weird thing is.... my parents still want me to get tires rotated, oil changed... etc, somewhere else. they don't know how, so i don't know how apparently, i guess its just hard to explain some things to them. Anyways, after reading some of your life stories, you all had some good things to say. OMG you all have changed my life, you can die happy :D . Anyways, for those of you who build up muscle cars with your dad or what not.... i envy you like no other, i'd love to help my dad build up a car, sadly he isn't into cars much :(. anyays... thanks... somewhat, or something, for all the replies, i didn't expect this many, guess i opened on a hot subject for many of you

Have you ever sat down with your Dad and asked him to help you do some of these things? So he may know nothing about it, but he may want to spend the time with his son and learn himself.

Give that a try....

Good luck

HAHAHAHA this cracks me up! I remember my mom yelling at me when it was 11:00 pm and I was still in the garage with the skil saw building my sub box. I remember my Dad getting pissed because he could hear my stereo from 8 blocks away. I used to get grounded from my pull out stereo! (he would take it and hide it).

Now I'm almost 30 and I'm still getting it! I work with my dad everyday and he's always saying stuff like, "looks like you lifted your truck some more", or "You're gonna ruin that truck if you try to make it an automatic", oh and my favorite "You coulda bought a cadilac for the $$ you have in that truck!"

So get used to it, I havent lived at home for 12 years, or had my parents pay for any carpayment, mod, insurance, nothing and I still get grief. "Parents just dont understand".

Now the funny thing is they should have seen this coming! They are the one's who bought me the remote controlled dune buggys when I was little. It was only a natural progression to building a Bronco for 4x4ing....

Now my advise to you. Dont go inside and tell your mom you are going to remove the skid plates. She will never get it. Look at your other options to gain a few MPG first, exhaust, tune up, routine maintenence. Just like the kid who lives next door to me, went out and bought a bright red 88 Toyota MR2, sweet little car in great shape, spent $1100 for some 16" Konig rims and Nitto tires, Spent $1500 on his stereo, spent $$$ for a bra, blue headlights, sport seat covers, tinted windows, alarm, etc..all that stuff is great until the brakes go out because they needed pads 20K miles ago, or until the 130K mile exhaust system falls apart, etc...you get my point. I spent 6 years building my truck, the first thing I did was get it mechanically sound, who cares what it looks like!!! get it running right, get ahead of the maintenence, because those shiny rims and that 1200W stereo dont do you any good sitting in the Ford sevice department...
actually there is no reason to remove the skid plates, actually they help keep the frame rigid when cornering, they protect dry grass from catching fire from your exhaust, and they will save your butt if you hit a speed bump too hard with your lowered 4x4. Also I wouldnt be surprised to see your MPG go down when you removed the skid plates, they may also help the undercarriage airflow. Oh and if your dad catches you removing parts from your Explorer without his permission, just know that he's gonna get pissed and you are gonna get grounded. I see you are a smart kid, especially for 16, You are VERY lucky to be driving a 96 Ex, and it seems that you know that. SO just do yourself a favor, follow your parents advise, concentrate on other stuff besides making your Explorer the coolest one in the neighborhood, and just be careful. Dont go getting speeding tickets or driving like a little punk because one day you will wreck that Explorer and all those mods you made will go to waste. Being a good driver takes time and experience.

Dont get me wrong, I'm all for you using your hard earned money to fix up your truck, or for doing the cheap tricks like the throttle cable mod, but dont make the mistake (alot of kids do these days) of pouring all your $$ into it, pace yourself. Buy your GF some flowers instead, get your mom a nice card or something, and tell your dad how much you appriciate all their help and the fact that they let you drive THEIR 96 Explorer. For you (like me) are one of the lucky people in this world, we have nice homes, we have nice cars, we have opportunity and education, thats more then 99% of the people in this world will ever have. So if your dad yells at you for doing something he thinks is stupid, just take it in stride, you are not always going to see eye to eye. My dad and I rarely see eye to eye, but he is still the best TEACHER i ever had, especially when it comes to learning the value of a dollar.........

So good luck, keep us posted, be proud to drive such a sweet ride, treat it like a lady, and most important STAY OUT OF TROUBLE! it will pay off later in life....go straight to college after high school, dont buy a motorcycle, chew with your mouth closed, open the door for your girlfriend, blah, blah blah blah......I know I'm bored.

Oh and work your ass off for that $9 an hour, do the best job you can always, no questions asked.....

Hey I just tried that number and all I got was heavy breathing, I want my $$$ back....

Some of you guys must have spent like 20 min or more typing this stuff. At least i gave a lot of people something to write about :) :)

Just trying to help you out.

Moral of the story: These are the only parents you'll have. You will have plenty of cars. Give it time. If you can't mod your X now, just wait a few years. You're only 17, you have plenty of time for cars later.

psychotic

the skid plates are for function, the day may come when you'll be glad you have them [on]. put them back on.

honest.

you are a fortunate young man, don't forget to count your blessings [often].

Ok, now for me. I am 17 years old and yea, i was given a 96 V8 XLT Explorer. I don't pay for insurance, or any other payments besides gas. I have payed for every single little thing on my Explorer though and i am happy i did it. The coolest thing about it though is that my dad loves i am doing it. He likes it because he is a believer of "they didn't pay for, they don't care about it" colt and by me putting money into, he knows i will have more respect for its maintenence, ect... Some things he is iffy about, like the big stereo and all, but he likes the fact that i made it safer by lowering it and putting better shocks and sway bars on it. (that was cool) Another cool thing about the old man is that he made sure i got a V8, he is a muscle car buff, and he had a 427 Vette back in the day and now drives a Z06 on the bottle.

But back to the point. ....i think your best shot at modding your truck is by telling them exactly what you want to do, tell them they don't have to pay for anything, and if possible, try to make it sound like it is making the car better in their eyes. Like making it safer by lowering its center of gravity ect.

I don't get why they don't let you change your own oil, rotate tires, ect....that is just whack, my dad would b!tch slap my if i payed some dude to change my oil....haha

XLT 66 you got pics?

Parents just don't understand

I got in on this late, but after reading everyones post I had to reply. I'm 36 and my parents still don't understand, but that doesn't bother me. I realize now that what they think is a waste, is because it doesn't interest them. Hell, my wife doesn't understand, but she does support me. One good thing is now I have a two year old son who enjoys helping daddy, and laughs over every whoop-de-doo when we are wheeling, hang in there, your day will come, you have a long way to go. I make really good money, and still I have to wait at times, like others I have bills, seems daddy's interest are always last.:D Enough rambling, compromise with your parents, and take it slow, mods will come. Trust me dads are more proud of your ability to customize, and the mods you make, your interest are a product of him. He's just not letting on, may be agreeing with mom to keep the peace. That will probably always be his secret.

I have some pics, but i can't find the ones i took after i had the thing lowered. I have some pics with the wheels, subs, and headunit. I need to wash the ex really bad anyways, now i can do it, and take some pics of it lowered and what not....

Explorer Pics...

Click on the one that says Bronco....

the bronco is my brother's

i put the skid plates back on in exchange for being able to change the oil to synthetic, change the oil filter, the fuel filter, put in a magnetic oil pan bolt, and put in a can of sea foam

Hey psychotic, if you really want to score points with your parents, apologize and tell them that they were right after all about the skid plates. It'll get their respect and make it easier to talk to them in the future. :)

.... in addition, it wouldn't hurt to wash and wax ( Zaino, of course ) their rides....

You are on a roll....

WOW!
am i ever late on this one!
well im 17 and am fortunate enough to be in the same situation with "my" x. but i do gas.
first off, i laughed when i read they didnt want you to take off the roof rake cause i went through the same thing with it. dad didnt have "enough room in the garage" if you saw my garage youd laugh cause its huge. sometimes parents logic makes NO sense! like, i can lower my truck, but i cant take the goddam roof rack off??
secondly, my dad is always trying to get me to put all my money into maintenance and other thigns than the truck, cause most of my money goes towards my stereo. ex: i want to buy a new cadence amp and alpine type Rs adn he would rather see other things. (not that i dont pay for maintence as it is, theres a fuel filter on my back seat waiting to be put in.
thirdly, i agree with half of each side, sometimes its best to go with what they say and just work on them for the mods. but sometimes you need to be "sneaky sneaky" and jst do it, if they wont notice. ie: xenon bulbs, throttle cable fix.

my late .02

oops, another thing, whenever i want something for my truck, i usually tell my dad and he says come back in 2 weeks and tell me if u still want it. if i do he has no prob with it cause he knows i really want it. he dont like spontaneous buys. he usually does try and talk me out of it tho.

ok this one was just to make 100 posts....:D :D

another preachy post ny an old fogey

Yeah, I remember being that age and being able to make spontaneous buys on toys like stereo stuff and whatnot....

I made a spontaneous buy the other day, in fact....$3.99 for a can of liquid rubber to repair a CB antennae base so I wouldnt have to spend $30.00 for a new one... <grin>

Have fun while ya can.....I dont mean that you cant have fun when you are older....I wouldnt trade my wife, kids and house for a HUNDRED souped-up trucks......even if they all had neon lights under em! :) But yes, I do remember "the day", so no more harping from me.....

Just remember that stereo stuff burns/wears out, neon lights are cool for a while but will eventually become "unhip".....and in the end cars are cars and chances are that the one you are sinking all that hard earned cash into will end up in someone else's driveway and eventually the junk yard.....your stereo amps etc will either be sold off to pay a bill or two or wind up collecting dust in your basement.......

I remember the excitement and pride of customizing my rides, though......and I still get a kick out of doing it when the funds permit....but priorities change.....

Enjoy it now while your prioroties are still all fun.....

To be honest, I think that there is probably just a hint of jealousy in the posts posted by old fogeys like me.... <grin>.......

Have fun with it...........we only go around once, and you have plenty of time to be responsible with your money later.....just dont forget that there IS a later.....so dont burn the bridge to your parents......you'll need them later in life...........

ENough preaching......Happy customizing..........

:)
