Can someone please explain to me how this parking brake cable setup is supposed to work? I've just replaced the drum shoes (what a PITA!) but there's a lot of slack in the cables so I'm thinking I need to replace those as well. But looking at the picture, I can't even see how they are supposed to work. Cable A runs to the foot pedal. Got it. Cable A pulls on cable D, which runs through sheath D to the driver's side parking shoes. Got it. All good so far, and that side works fine.

But what is supposed to be pulling on passenger side cable P ? Cable P is firmly fixed into the end of the metal fitting that is clamped to the sheath of cable D. But cable D runs right through them both. Which means the pull from cable A through to cable D has no effect on cable P. So where's the force supposed to be applied to pull cable P? I know the equalizer spring is missing, but has something else fallen off or come apart?

Cable A runs from the foot pedal to the equalizer (if present) or directly to the other cables, pulling Cable D that connects to the driver's side brake shoes. However, Cable P, which goes to the passenger side brake shoes, typically needs an equalizer to ensure it receives the tension from Cable D. If the equalizer spring is missing, that could explain the slack and why Cable P isn't functioning properly. Check for any missing components and make sure all connections are secure. If the cables are worn or frayed, consider replacing them, as old cables can contribute to the slack you're experiencing.

Thanks. I just thought there might be more to it, because I can't imagine how one spring will make up the difference in tension. Mine is missing, so I'll find one to try, but I'm leaning towards the foot pedal cable replacement. There's a good two inch play side to side when slack. Thanks again for the response.
