Hey all!

I just saw a pic in another thread and remembered that i am missing this spring

How strong is this spring? could i use alternative spring? a wild guess - maybe somebody knows part nr :)

You can buy replacement springs at the auto parts store, there should be universal springs made for such things.

The stock spring is actually pretty weak, and so a slightly thicker and stronger spring is better, and can save a lot of brake wear by pulling the rear drum shoes as far in as possible, so it's not necessary to get the same spring at all.

I actually went to the hardware store and got a even thicker and stronger spring that was for pulling a storm door closed, so it really keeps those shoes disengaged. You can probably find a spring that will work, and you can just bend/cut the ends to be a perfect fit, so it's stretched when the parking brake is engaged, and has just a little bit of tension when released, enough to keep it from rattling around.

It's a really good idea to check the rear brake cables to be sure they move smoothly as well, over time driving in the wet or in snow can make the cables rust to the cable sheath, and the rear brakes won't engage like they should, and the shoes won't retract all the way without a really, really strong spring.

What does this spring do? I'm missing mine also.
