Hi,
Haven't visited here in a long time, but I'm hoping people can help me out. My truck is a stick-shift ranger with an explorer disc braked rear axle. I haven't used the parking brake in quite a long time, but last year I did change all the cables. I normally just leave it in gear when parked. It's suddenly become very important now that I'm transporting my daughter to pre-school and we have an inclined driveway. She climbed in the other day and grabbed the stick shift while doing so. I freaked, and now need to get the parking brake working again ASAP. The problem is that the rear cable keeps popping off one side because of corrosion on the internal parking brake parts in the hub. It just doesn't move freely, and keeps the mechanism from retracting properly. Even with lubrication and all that, I'm still having a problem. I'm gonna need to replace the mechanism, but I'm wondering what this would cost, if anybody else has done it, and has any suggestions. The comments from the garage where the work is being done implied that it might be hard to find these parts, since most explorers are automatic and rarely use the parking brakes much less need replacement parts for them.
As you may or may not know, I cringe at anyone working on my truck other than basic oil changes, and prefer to do all needed (and not needed) work on my truck myself. With 2 kids I just don't have the time to do it myself and need it done ASAP before something bad happens. Please help!
