Hey guys I found out today that my motor is seized up and I'm told I can only get a few hundred $ out of it on a trade-in. My question is, is it worth it to me to try and part the thing out instead? Even though the motor is toast the rest of the driveline seems to be alright along with most of the body.

Thanks!

Why not buy a new motor?

I've seen motors on eBay for less then a grand and the last time I was at autozone I inquired about rebuilt and they were about 3 grand.

Mainly because I dont have the $1000+ labor right now to put a new motor in.

Thanks!

What about a junkyard for a used one with low miles?

Fair enough, I just wanted to ask because it seems like some people never think of that option.

I guess the big question for you to answer is if you want to part it out, what is the minimum amount of money you want to put in your pocket to make it worth your while.

If it’s only a couple grand, I think you could make that, but beyond that it might be tough. And you need to factor in your time to tear it down, your time corresponding with potential buyers, and then packing and shipping the items. After helping a friend part out a car I have made up my mind that unless I have the extra garage space to let stuff sit around for months and the time to mess with it, its not worthwhile, just my $0.02

Thanks
Tom

Thanks for the input, as for time and space I've got plenty of both. If I can get a couple thousand out of it I'd be real happy. I'm just trying to think of the most cost effective option, take the few hundred $ on trade-in or try to salvage what I can.
Thanks again!

put up some pics an place an ad in our for sale section maybe some one would like to buy the whole thing from ya ??

from experience you may make more by parting it out

A few years ago I tried to sell a 75 Lesabre on ebay... highest bid was $300
I had $700 into it I wanted back.

So I parted and after paying my ebay fees, I had $1500.
It took a month though.

Is your explorer a v6 or v8?
2wd or 4x4?

fender flares? guys are always looking for a set
leather? you could probably sell the seats for a couple hundreds?
3rd row? someone always looking for a 3rd row on this site.
how are the tires? you might get a few hundred for aluminum wheels and tires

It's an '03, XLT V-8, 4x4

Thanks!

If I were closer Id buy it from you......Its an 03 bro....as long as its in good shape body wise Id put a motor in it...

So what did you end up doing?

Want to sell the ignition lock cylinder and keys?

Tom

Locked up engine on an '03?? That stinks. Please share the details on the mode of failure.

Don't know if the "Long Math" will back this up, but lots of folks here looking for parts, but don't know how you could compete with the auto recyclers, plus shipping.

Again, the costs of replacing such a SUV with an equivalent ride would justify the motor swap, if you are so inclined.

Yeah let us know what you decided
Im still interested in the engine cover if you're parting.

I'm interested in a few things as well. What is the interior color?

Yeah how did you lock that sucker up?
