A friend just informed me of a ranger thats been written off... now my explorer need a new engine so i was wondering if there is and compaitbility issues between a 91 ranger 4.0 and a 91 explorer 4.0? Also, i would like to know if the entire drive train would fit the explorer?
I have both 91 Explorer XL 4.0 and a 94 Ranger STX 4.O. Both are manual transmissions with electronic transfer cases. The sheetmetal is different on the Ranger becuase it is the later body style similar the the 96 up Explorer. The drivelines are identical between the two vehicles. If the engine in the ranger is a 4.0L then it should be identical to the Explorer as all 4.0L OHV castings are the same . Things to look out for would be differences between the wiring harness of both vehicles. For example the engine in my explorer is out a 96 explorer sport because my little sister cracked the heads in the 91. The 96 had a cam sensor and the 91 doesn't (no wire to plug into it, I just left the sensor there) Also the 96 didnt have an oil level sensor in the pan and the 91 does so the wire to sensor just got zip tied out of the way as I didn't have the time to change the pans betweent the two motors. Carefully inspect the upper plenum hose connections and the exhaust manifold connections as there may be difference there also. My Explorer only has one O2 sensor on the Y pipe and the Ranger has two O2 sensors, one for each bank of cylinders. Just some ideas. Good Luck
