I'm wanting to do away with the corregated intake hose and air box and go with something like I had on my 94 Wrangler:
I ordered this system back in the 90s and it made a noticable difference in torque. For one reason it increased the intake noise. The real test was going up hills. Where before I'd had to leave it in 3rd to make it up this hill near my house, afterwards I could put it in 4th gear and it would maintain speed.
I've done the same thing to other vehicles like my Subaru Baja:
All I did was cut down a 2" piece of exhaust pipe and buy two 90 elbows.
Before it had this box on it:
I built a turbo system for my Fiat Spider so it's a straight pipe was well:
The theory is corrugated intake hoses create turbulence so it cuts down on intake noise but also robs some power. So there is a trade off. Also the longer the intake piping, the more velocity the air picks up.
I'd like to either buy or build something for my 5.0 liter Explorer but so far all I can find are systems for later models.
Anyone got a home built system they would like to share photos of or where to possibly buy one already made? Since I'm into oddball cars I usually have to end up making my own parts so that shouldn't be an issue.
I think I can get away with using a 3 or 4" (haven't measures the TB yet) madreal exhaust bent elbow and attach a conical air cleaner on the end of it. But 3+" madreal bent exhaust elbows are not cheap so I could probably buy one for about the cost of making one myself.
The kit I ordered with my Jeep came with a modified throttle body. The only thing I could tell they did to it was they machined a lip off the base. Are performance throttle bodies available for my Explorer? I looked to see if a system from a Mustang GT would work but I think the throttle body is in a different position than on the Explorers.
Thanks!
