With my Explorer needing a new tranny I am looking for good brand torque converters and a Shift kit for an A4LD.

Any one have experince that they can share.

There's not much out there for our trannies. Basically I've got all the "cool stuff" they make. I have either a BM or Transgo shiftkit and a 2800 stall converter. I think the converter was adapted from one for another Ford auto tranny.

Besides that, there isn't much; sorry!

I'm working for a Torque Converter Co. In Sales.
We make a converter for the 4.0, as for the converter it's about as heavy duty as we can make it. I have it in my 92 for just about a year now. I put about 50-60k on the Trans and converter and still working great.
As for a shift kit I have to look in to that. My X was changed tru the computer.
Please get back to me for more info.
p.s i'm also working on make a internet store

Converter go to Pro Torque. I didnt and that was a mistake. They have a low stall HD unit - I think its $400.

Shift kits from Superior, and Trans Go. These are valve body kits- drilling, springs etc. Some of the stuff is update items which you might not need. But you can tailor the shifts a bit.

If you are rebuilding look for an alto "power pak" kit to increase the number of clutches. The superior shift klit also has better clutch apply springs - which may be standard in the 4r series (hear say havent been able to confirn it). If you cant get the power pack, updated waffle faced clutches, or grooved clutches are avail from Ford and aftermarket to increase holding power.

General rebuild ideas

address cooling during rebuild- more cooler & Bigger pan(custom) especially if you use a higher stall converter.

OD planet get a welded or billet piece.

Pay the money for a new pump from Ford.

Make sure they check the bellhousing and align the housing during install. Check the crank bushing. All to prevent the dreaded front seal blow out on rebuilds.
