I got a set of the PIAA 1500XT's as an early Christmas present and am looking for some advice on hooking them up. What I'd like do to is this: Control them by the stock switch and have them usable with both high and low beams. I have a '96 and after doing some searches here have located what I think is the head light/fog light relay box by my KKM. But the colors don't seem to completely match up with what was posted. And I'm a little confused on how to get it controlled by the switch on both high and low beams.

Stock fog lights work only with low beams and PIAA recommends they only be on with high - so I'd like to have control over both modes. Has anyone done this? If so any tips on where you spliced in? or even a wiring diagram? Any help would be great.

Merry Christmas...

Well, I'm pretty sure someone on here knows what wires you need to mess with in a 96. I did that in my 98 and was going to get a set of 1500's to wire up similar to what you are talking about. Dead Link Removed is a thread that I started about wiring them up to work with the highbeams and also to be separately controlled with the foglight switch. There's some diagrams in there you can look at.

in your thread you said you'd already wired your fog lights to be independant from the other lights - how'd you do that?

I saw a picture here of a relay box for either a '98 or '99 and it looked a bit differnet than what I have. But sounds like I'm getting closer.

Thanks

Try this. That should work on your 96.

Oh, in that thead, scroll down till you see Brian's98XLT's post. He says how to rewire it to work anytime, not just with parking lights. That is how I rewired mine. I ran it to a line in the fuse box that turns on when the car turns on so they couldnt be left on.

cool, but then how do you tie in the PIAA lights to replace the stock wiring? Doesn't sound like I want to use the stock wiring to power the lights... just the relay / switches.

Sorry for being confused - just don't want to fry anything... hehe

Ummm... not sure. Relays totally screw me up. Just ask in that thread that I started and someone in there will know.

I was just rewiring my piaa 1500s a few minutes ago. One of the bulbs blew and i decided to change to 100 watt bulbs and replace all the wiring. Anyway...heres what you need to do. To use the factory switch to control the lights, connect the factory fog light power wire to the positive coil of the relay. The other terminal of the relay coil should be connected to ground. Use the relay to connect power from the battery to each of your new lights and just connect the other terminal of the lights to ground. That will allow you to use the new wiring and control them with the factory switch. If you want them to be on with your high beams or parking lights, there are several posts about how to rewire them. I have some pictures of how i did that on my 98, but it may be different for you.

Just a suggestion on fog &/or driving lights. The driving lights I always hook up to only come on with the high beams. That way I dont have 2 things to do when cars approach and I have to dim the lights. Just hitting the high/low stalk switch dims and shuts off the driving lights.
Fog lights I like to hook to just a switched power source so they can be the only lights on but go off with the ign. key. Some states that have veh. inspections want the fogs to not be able to come on unless the lights are on.
Those folks have to hook them to the parking lights.
Later....
