thanks for the info guys. i guess i will go with 265 70 instead of 265 75 just because there is a slight rub.

damn dude that black explorer of urs looks good... i made a suggestion in a diff thread for a guy to get some silverstar turn signals for his X with clear corners.. would look awesome on urs too..only 11 bucks... i also suggest a grille guard.. if u go to dealsofsteel.com they sell one for a 3rd gen X for 279 with free shipping.. cant beat it.. and its solid.. i rear ended someone and left one mark from the initial hit but its good

Kumho mud terrains, hell of alot of road noise.

I just got my 265's on yesterday, thanks for evryones help, I'm glad I went with the 265 instead of the 255. They fit perfectly! I posted pics in the tires section

speedo is off, trust me

The RPM/speedo comparison won't tell you anything, because the speedo works off the rear of the tranny, so the computer has no idea what tires you're running. If you slapped a set of 12" atv tires on, it would still read "correct", but you'd be going a damn sight slower! A GPS will prove it if you don't wanna take my word for it, but I promise it's true -- you're going faster than it reads.

Some geek math:

For every revolution a 29" tire makes, it moves forward 91.06".

For every revolution a 31" tire makes, it moves forward 97.34".

So for any given RPM, a 31" tire on a vehicle calibrated for a 29" tire cause an increase in speed of 106.9%, which means when it reads 55 MPH, you're actually going 58.8 MPH. For 65 MPH, that's 69.5. So if you're doing 70 in a 65 because you figure that won't get you for 5 over, you're really doing 74.83, which I'm sure they'll call 75. Now you're 10 over. Oops.

Not much of a difference, but enough to make for a nice ticket if a picky cop runs across you. You can spring for the speedo correction if you don't want to have to think about it, or just keep the speedo at 5 under the speed limit in a 65 zone, and 4 under the rest of the time.

Wow you mean someone else agrees? :biggthump

Nice "geek math" :notworthy

Tire size

I have 255/70r17 on my 04 and there is not much room in the front but they do not rub. The tire shop did not want to put them on. They wanted a fitting fee. I took it to some one eals and I have not had a problem. I wish I would have went bigger.

Thank you for the inspiration...

After much deliberation, and after seeing this thread, I decided to change my stock size tires (235/70/R16) with larger tires. I really didn't want to perform any lifts on my vehicle (at least not now) and after seeing this thread, I went for the 265/70/R16's which fit and look great. NO RUB AND THE GPS TESTED MPH IS DEAD ON ACCURATE. They are Goodyear Wrangler R/S T's just in case anyone is wondering. They are quiet on the highway and the car floats over bumps. I wanted an A/T tire but I do mostly highway driving and didn't want to sacrifice too much. Right after I changed the tires, I added the roof rack and now the front runner bar and fogs are on the way. More pics to come. Thanks again!:us:

Welcome Andy. Looks great, but your gonna want a cover for that spare the sun will dry rot it. As for the speedo your lucky my x reads 10 mph off oops officer i thought I was going 40

I was curious about this. My dad had a set of 265/70/16 bfg at's off a 2500 chevy that i was going to put on my mounty, and big o said it would rub against the upper control arm and suspension components behind the tire. I didn't want to risk anything but after I left I realized that there was so no way it would rub there since it moves up and down as a unit and not side to side. Since then my dad sold the tires, but I am still looking for some new ones and having a hard time deciding what size I want to get

It's not that they move side to side, it's just that the width of the tire on the stock wheel comes close to rubbing on the top of the steering knuckle with a 265/75. You can run them though. You'll get a bit of rubbing on the front lower edge of the front wheel fenderwells but you can trim that no problem.

Well the 75 number in that tire size makes it too tall. A 265/70/16 is a wider, shorter tire. Thats why there would be rub on a 75. It's a ratio type number and it's tricky to understand if you ask my opinion. If memory serves, someone ran tires that size on this forum and locked up the tires during hard breaking because they caught the wheel well. The only performance issues i have noticed with my new rubber is:

Slight loss of stability at higher speeds. I get a little drift when cruising, but a much softer ride for sure.

A little more pull on a tight turn, sharp full u turns.

I can only imagine what a lift would do with even bigger tires, glad i didnt do it because i still throw the kids in the car and drive on the highway. Hope this helps.

This does help. I am looking at buying tires on January and have debated what size tires I should go with.

Of course, i am no mehcanic and i can only offer my own experience. I will add a note that pep- boys and bj tires would not not mount this tire size on my ride.

The 75 refers to the aspect ratio. 265/75/16 = 265mm wide at section width (bulge of tire) 75 = sidewall height is 75% of width 16 = obviously wheel size. Different tire brands vary a little in actual measurement. I had 265/75/16 on stock wheels and liked it, no rub at all. Now I have 265/70/16 on aftermarket wheels with different offset and looks good. Next time I'm going back to the bigger ones, but doing 1 1/2" bodylift first they might rub because of offset

just put them on today and there awsome.there Wild Track Radial LTR. they fit and the look perfect. this is the size tire these year explorers should have come with from the factory. no rubbing and i didn't feel any loss of power and my speedo still reads the same rpm to mph as when i had the stock 235/70/16 so i'm really happy. gives a rugged look to the explorer i think.
haven't been off roading with them yet since i live in the city i have to drive like an hour or so to find any off roading situations but soon as i do i'll post pics.

I Love The 265s I'm Planing On Getting A Set Soon. I Really Like These But I'm Thinking BFG A/Ts

Anybody selling a decent set of 1" spacers? Pm me
