pinging in engine

Like someone suggested try cleaning your MAS. Also run a bottle or 2 of injector cleaner through the fuel system.

I appreciate it. I will try that. Also, do you think that my spark plugs or wires could cause it? I am sure ya'll know that the way they run the wires so close to the block, I have seen some heat marks. I know I should replace them but I was wondering if there could be some other reason.

Many V8 explorers have this problem and almost all of them are caused by cracked exhaust manifolds. I'm pretty sure mine has it too (cause it pings like you describe and i've checked everything else it could be) I just havn't got around to fixing it yet.

I know thats not what you wanted to hear cause its not real cheap to fix but i'm pretty sure thats what it'll be. If you do a search on it you find many threads where it was causing the same pinging and the manifolds were the problem.

If it is the headers, Ford Motorsport Headers aren't too expensive and are a good fix.

I would rather have the exhaust manifold than the intake.

mine does the same thing running 55+ on the highway in cooler weather (below 70ºF)

ive got the kkm and duals.
it goes away, for me, with 89 or 92 octane.

I see more and more people saying they move to a higher octane. I don't understand why it doesn't do it at first with 87, then it does after a while. Any thoughts?

moving to a higher octane fuel without timing and fuel delivery adjustments is bad in the long term for the motor and exhaust. The fuel may not burn completely and will damage your injectors, cylinders, and exhaust system over time.

Ben, pinging may get worse during the course of the drive as all the components heat up.

Did I read your profile right? you have a supercharger in your Explorer?

yup

How did you manage that? Make a lot of changes like with the pistons, or anything like that? How different is it from stock to you?

It is a bolt-on kit for the OHV motor, made by BBK. I haven't done any internal engine mods yet, that's waiting for my rebuild. But I have about every bolt-on you can get. Go to my homepages in my sig for details.

i am really impressed. one more thing and I am going back to my issue, who is BBK? I guess that's what I get for not being here earlier.

Well I did exactly what most of yall told me to do. I sprayed the MAP or MAF with some intake cleaner and it sounds like it took care of it I appreciate all your help and I definitely will be asking for ya'll s help down the road, probably next weekend.
