ok, for a month now my head unit, Pioneer Premier deh-p720 has been turning on and off on its own, wont let me change settings, and sometimes keeps playing even after i take the keys out the ignition and the faceplate off.

Thinking it was the wiring, i resoldered everything. I put it back in last night and
its still turning on and off from time to time. Any ideas??

If it is a bad deck, who can repair it? Thanks!

Check your wiring, sounds like something wrong with your power and accessory wiring possibly, shorting in between the two? Or else there is truly a problem with the unit, though I have not heard of this type of problem before. Something is fishy. Did you wire it up yourself (splicing and soldering?) or did you just get smar harnesses from a place like Circuit City? If you want to try and trouble shoot it, go into Circuit City and ask for smart harnesses, that way you can try and rule out the wiring right away if it still acts funny using the smart harnesses.

Its been in my car for over 4 years, problem free. I got the wiring harness and soldered it all myself. The re-solder i just did was done by a friend who is a very good solderer.

Each wire is soldered, and wrapped in electrical tape.
The only thing i havent wired is the amp turnon.

Thanks for the helpful advice so far!!

hmmm, with what you're saying it may be time to send it in to get repaired. The symptoms just don't jive much with a basic wiring problem.

A buddy of mine had a Pioneer premier deck, and was a POS, has sent it back several time. Sorry, I don't know what it was that he had to have fixed though

When things have to be sent back multiple times it usually means that the repairman did a poor problem diagnosing the problem or didn't do any work on the unit at all, I see this happen a lot when major chains send stuff to third party repair places to get fixed. I can't remember the last pioneer deck I had to send in to get fixed, generally speaking they are some of the most reliable decks out there.

I'm on my 2nd Premier HU. First one only started acting up after my wife closed the faceplate before the CD was inserted. Caused a few problems, but just gave me an excuse for another one. I've used Denon, Nakamichi and several Alpine units in the past (mostly high-end offerings), and have been quite pleased with Pioneer vis a vis those units.

i talked to my buddy who professionally installs and he says its the deck for sure. not sure if i should sent it in or get a new one.
