'99 Explorer Sport
Hey guys i need some help, this is my first help needed post so lets see how it goes. I have a 1999 Explorer Sport but i am not sure if i have the Premium or Mach audio system. I am getting confused by all these sites saying different things. It has the 8" sub in the back right quarter panel. Anyways i have a problem. i bought a double din kenwood deck that i need to get installed but when i went to the installation place and said that i had a factory sub they said it was a problem because there is a factory amp they need to get to?? anyways i bought a wiring harness at futureshop (aka bestbuy in u.s.a) for 95+ ford's but it doesnt seem to be the proper harness to take the factory sub and amp? can someone please send me a link to the proper wiring harness that i need. Crutchfield and scosche and other sites all have different ones so please help me guys because this is been bothering me since ive spent like 2000 on subs. new deck. and amp so please help me get this wiring harness that is holding me up thanks.

Yo Please help

I don't know how to navigate this site yet. how can i post my question that i need help with where i will get replies instead of the welcoming section

Have you actually had the headunit out yet? Do you have an antenna behind it? My guess is no. I have the JBL stock stereo and from what I've found out, you have to order a harness that will plug into the headunit that is actually in the back quarter panel area. That's where the antenna plugs into as well. It is about 30 bucks online and that's the only place that I've found it....not in best buy or walmart, etc.

This is the one that I need, but I don't know if it's the same for yours since yours is a 99, but I think that you would need a harness like this for your truck to make it work. Hope this helps... http://www.installer.com/item/display_item.php?it=70-5601

Help

Do you think that the JBL system is the same as the Mach audio or the Premium system? im so confused :(

This sounds like the same problem I was having when I did my system. If you got a new amp and subs then there's not much point that the installation place needs to get at the stock amp. They should know what they are doing in order to wire everything correctly. Maybe find a different store that knows more about it because my place just left the stock amp/sub there and installed my aftermarket deck/amp/subs and all that fine.

Help

Hey do u know if the factory amp only powers the back sub ? if so i don't need the factory sub even playing because it probably will sound distorted with my 2 15" memphis subs. if the sub is only controlled by the amp but the speakers arent controlled by the amp couldnt i just hook up the speakers im getting to the new deck and then have the new speakers hooked up to the deck ? unless the factory speakers are hooked up to the amp also i would be screwed. please let me know thanks. Im getting aftermarket 5x7's because they said that theres 4 6x8's stock but theres more 5x7's to choose from and they will bolt right in.

The factory speakers are hooked to the factory deck. Unless you get higher rated speakers than your new deck can handle they can just hook into the new deck also. Whoever you're having install this, honestly, should know the drill and should be able to look up exactly what's in your truck already. The stock sub/amp will just be unhooked and they will most likely just leave them sitting in the back since you can't see them and they are out of the way.

Also, if some place tells you it's going to cost more or whatever because you already have stuff in the truck that they need to bypass, leave. They really don't have to do anything, it's just one cable that runs to the back to your sub.

Help

This shop actually knows what there doing though thats the sad thing, lol..
but if i can leave it unhooked i wonder how much they'd charge to unhook the amp and sub? if they have to open the rear quarter panel i know it would cost..

They don't have to open the rear wall...unless you want that stock sub out for some reason. All it requires is one cable to be left unplugged and it's fine. I'm just going by how mine was done so maybe you're wanting it done some other way.

Help

i just want it done correctly and cheap. as im only 17 with not much money just keep working for it. but yea i ordered a double din kenwood and another problem arised... they said they might have to reconstruct the dash? because the factory din is a 1.8 not a double apparently. but i bought a dash kit for a double din so i dont no how its going to work? will it bring the deck forward a bit so it doesnt require shaving ? what kind of system do u have in yours now ?

That's my car/system.

It kind of sounds like you might have jumped the gun a little bit without doing the right research :-/. You would have saved a chunk of change if you hadn't already bought the wrong wiring harnesses/Double din kit and possibly the Kenwood deck because reconstructing the dash or whatever will probably cost a lot. I did the same thing when I first started on my system...bought a single din kit and wiring harness for my deck and tried installing it myself and they were all wrong.

pull the radio out. if there's an antenna connection at the radio then you'll be fine with just a harness. if there's no antenna connection behind the radio, then you will have to either rewire the truck or buy the harness that runs back to the factory amp

Help

It has a 6 Disc changer in the middle storage thing. Does that give any help without taking the factory headunit out ?
