1991 ford explorer(exploder)still sounds like a coffee pot percolating!!!! Replaced radiator, water pump, heater core, radiator cap(13lb.). Also tried burping the system (on slight incline and level). It only percolates when i have temperature control to the heater or defrost set on half way point to hot. If i set it on cool it doesn't seem to make that noise at all.

is there any way there could be air in the heater hoses or heater core? that sounds like what it is to me

burping the coolant

Well, if the sound is from the cooling system, and if the heater core and the radiator are ok (not plugged / ruined / etc), then...

My experience with this is as follows

I got a '93 Ex. The coolant color in it was of ferocious quality (looked like rusty water, basically). I drained, refilled with water, ran, drained, refilled, etc.

Obviously after all this there was some air left in the system.

I tried burping it by pinching the upper radiator hose. That helped some but not all the way. Then I drove it for a day, checking the coolant level frequently.

Driving it is what finally made all the air percolate up. Eventually it always does, if everything else is ok.

If not, I would say, there is a chance that there is a place somewhere where the air is entering the system...

I just reread your message... if it only does it when set on hot, I would tend to blame the heater core...

Hopefully it is the heater core, and not a head gasket.
