ASAP~Please help before it is too late~

I have a 94 explorer sport. The tranny is slipping. When I drive it, it does perfect till 2nd gear. I have to get it up to about 30 mph then let off the gas and it changes into 3 gear bypassing 2nd. then it is fine again, but it won't go into overdrive. I checked to fluid which has small leak from somewhere and it seems to have what appears to be small metal specks in it??? I have to go from Ohio to Mississippi in two days from now. Do you think I could make it if I only drive 55 mph all the way there?? (yes, I am female but have motor smarts but not tranny) PLEASE give me some advice as I am short on money and time. any ideas?

The prudent thing to do is to find another ride. Metal in the fluid is not a good thing. Plus your just going to make a bad situation worse and will only cost you more. Not counting, being stressed out the whole trip worring if it's going to quit all together. Migh want to check out bus tickets. Then just sit back and relax the whole trip. Good Luck

I am no transmission guru, but I do know this. If you need to make the trip, it won't be in that truck. Please make other plans. I hate to hear of people stranded on the highway. This truck needs to sit, undriven, until it is fixed.
Please, take this advice.

If there is metal in the fluid, it is everywhere in the system. The radiator, trans lines, and if there is one, auxilliary cooler, need replacing, or at least flushed real good. I would bet the trans is toast.

These are things are things I knew, I guess I am just stubborn and had to hear it from others to make me behave and not be foolish. Women! ha ha

Suggestion is to buy a rebuilt tranny. For what it's going to cost to rebuild yours, it's probably the same amount to just simply have a rebuilt one swapped with your current one. And you'll probably have more luck with the rebuilt one.

And I agree with everyone else, do not drive it on your trip.

There is a high probability that you have a broken intermediate band. I regret to tell you that you are most likely - regardless of whether you have THAT or not, looking at a rebuild. I agree that this is not your vehicle of choice for this trip. Sorry.

Well guys, You were all right. I took it for a drive and didn't make it anywhere when the tranny went out. Does anyone know of a cheap tranny in the Columbus, Ohio area within 100 miles. LOL

The V6 Explorer is the biggest weak link. They can be rebuilt for costs similar to other transmissions when not burned up. Unfortunately most of these get overheated way too much before people stop driving them. That alone raises the costs by many many hundreds of dollars.

$2000 rebuilds are not uncommon with theses trannies. When they give any problems stop driving them, you can save a $1000 or more. Often those high dollar rebuilds don't last very long at all.

Seriously consider replacing the radiator and extra cooler, plus flushing. I have a good useable 93 4x4 A4LD with 112,622 miles on it. Works fine, with a valve body kit, and longer modulator pin. Good luck,
