Hello, and thanks for reading this. I did try the search function, but it didn't help.

My granfather has a 91 explorer with a 4.0.
The Story:
It started blowing major amounts of smoke with gas running out of the tail pipes.
All in the same day it used 17 gallons of gas for 30 miles of travel.
Same day it died and would not restart. When you try to start it gas runs into the exhaust, and the odor is overwhelming.

The vacuum lines are full of gas.

What I think:
At first I though ringa are bad and gas is running past the cylinders.
Then I ran the codes and got 95 fuel pump secondary circuit fault, and 144 O2 sensor. I also got a 7*9*7*9 ??????? Not sure what that was.

I bought a fuel pressure tester, and get 22 when cranking. When I stop cranking the needle flies up, an then quickly falls to zero.

I think it is the pressure regulator, and bought one. I don't want to just swap parts.
So I am looking for any first thoughts. It seems to be getting lots of gas.

It has spark on all 6 cylinders.

I would go with the fuel pressure regulator. Gas in the vacuum lines a classic sign.

search, "fuel pressure regulator vacuum line"

Thanks for the replys. They have renforced my theory.
The search function was very helpful after Lonestar showed me the light.

I'll work on it this afternoon and let ya know.
Thanks again.:D

Well I fixed it today.
The intake plenum was so full gas rushed out when I took the intake hose of.
I syphoned well over a quart out of the intake.

I changed the FPR, and blew out all the vacuum lines.

Changed the right O2 sensor, changed the oil(filled a 4ga pail), and fired it up.

Its running fine, but the exhaust is still full of gas. I ran it for about an hour and the smoke is clearing up. I think the cat will be fine. (fire extingquesher in hand)

Tomorrow I will change the oil again, and it should be fine.

Thanks for the re-assurance of the FPR theory.

Was the crankcase full of fuel?
5 qts oil and 11 qts of fuel, OUCH

How long was it driven like that?

Well on his 30 mile drive all 17 gallons of gas were gone.
Any oil, fuel, or air chamber in the engine was full of gas.
Very nasty business. He was tinkering with the Ole' Exlporer before I got to it. He also added five more gallons. Maybe he cranked the engine so much it filled it up.

I have never seen that before. I hope to never see it again.

That cat is burned up by now man. though it may not have been in flames its doubtful that it can still do its job.
