Please help. Major engine failure.

Most people claim that removing the balance shaft (chain driven) on a SOHC engine has no noticable affect. The reason its their is to dampen vibration that may be noticed through the transfer case. I don't know if its really needed but I doubt any manufacturer puts anything on a vehicle thats costs one dime that it does not feel is truley needed. I've never heard of anyone trying to add on to a Mustang engine. Like I said, try searching the cam tensioner threads. These are the people that usually replace the engine. Very few of us try the repair, it costs more than replacing the engine.

Hey all,

just to update on what has happened so far...

I am still trying to get in touch with someone at Ford customer service in MI who may be able to help out with the premature engine failure. So far, it's a lot of being on hold and being passed from one representative, supervisor, or manager to the other.

As far as the Explorer goes, it is up and running beautifully. I found a motor for around $1,000 with 35K miles.

I also found out from research, for anyone interested in the swap, that a Mustang 4.0L (at least for the 2006 model year) will work in an Explorer of the same year. I know the balance shaft issue is in dispute as to its necessity, but once the intake and exhaust manifolds, mounts, and accessory brackets are removed, the block and heads are the same. The balance shaft seems to be the only internal difference.

And for some reason (in NJ at least), the Mustang motor is about half the price of an Explorer 4.0 with the same mileage. Who knows why.

I will post back as soon as I hear something from Ford. It may take a while though. Thanks again for all the replies.
