Problems w/the shop I took it to

Ok, I took it in yesterday (10-9-00) @ around 4:00. And they said they probably couldn't get to it till today. I figured it would be ok, and that they would have it done by today, and have my parents pick it up so I can drive it from school. Well, I go out to the parking lot today after school and my mom's caddy was still out there, so I figure my parents just never got around to it. Well, I go home, and my mom said that the place didn't work on it yet (this is a first come first serve place, and well, I was up there last night, soo) well, they told my parents it was the starter that was messed up. My mom told me it was going to be around $170, I figure it is a little high, but what can you expect from a shop ya know? Well, I had to go to work and my parents said they would pick it up once it was finished and take it to my work and swap cars. Well, they never came, I cam home and my dad told me that they ordered the wrong starter, now I am starting to get a little pissed. Then, my dad told me that it was $180 for just the starter, and then 1 hour labor. 1 HOUR LABOR for a job that took me less than 30 minutes to take the starter out, and put it back in. There are only 2 mounting bolts, and one bolt that holds the cable to it. And I am not a professional by any means. Well, I don't know how much 1 hour labor is, but I am sure it isn't that cheap. I am probably never going to go here again, this is the second time they have jipped me. Last time was the brakes. I am really pissed now, first because it was there all day today, and they never started on it until 1:30 because "they had a hard time finding the part." And two because they are charging me so much for a simple job, and charging me so much for the part. Also, do you think they are keeping the core refund?? The refund for the part that I OWN. I can't understand why the starter costs so much, it is a reman. unit also, just like the AutoZone, and Advance Auto starters, yet theirs only cost $110, plus $40 core deposit. What should I do? I am going to try and see why everyhting is costing so much, and try to get some money taken off because it is taking them so long to get it fixed, when it is a 30 min. job. Maybe less for them. Tell me what I should do? Do you think I am taking this too far?

Well, I'm pretty sure it's standard for most shops to charge AT LEAST 1 hr of labor. They factor in 30 minutes of paperwork(slow pencils I guess!).
As for the price on the part, try to find out were they are getting it from. I once went to one store for an O2 sensor and they quoted me a price and said they would have to order it and I could get it in like 2 days. So I went to the NAPA store down the street and asked them for the same part. Turns out the first store I went to just called NAPA to see if they could order it from them, and they were going to charge me like 50 bucks more than NAPA! Needless to say I ordered it myself from NAPA,saved 50 bucks and got the part a day earlier! Anyway, good luck man!
Oh, and I'm also pretty sure the average labor cost is about $50.00 per hour

Well, the thing that sucks is that I am going to be in school while they do the work, so I can't really have them call me and have them tell me info on this. I am gonna tell them, to either give me the core refund, or give me my part back, because they should not be getting money for a part that I own, which I know they are probably charging me for the core deposit, but not giving me the money back if I give them the starter. This sucks though...I really don't want to spend that much money to have them change something that I can change in 30 minutes, and save me more than $100. But I hope they can take some money out of there because I will tell them that I NEEDED the car today, and was expecting it to be done, and I had to cancel something because I didn't have the car by the time I got out of school. Sound good? I know its a lie, but its not like they have never lied to me about something. I thin its about time I stopped going there. My mom and dad used to know the manager guy because they used to go there all the time, but I haven't seen that guy in a while. Next time I am taking it to this locally owned place that I have heard some good things about, maybe they'll be better, and cheaper.

Well, guess what?? I got my car back, and guess how much it cost me?? $300!!!!!!! Yep, $188 for the atrter, I think around $60 or so for labor, $30 to run some diagnostic with the wiring or something. I dunno, but they wouldn't really take anything off of the price, pretty tupid, but I won't be going there anymore. Oh and it was the starter. The new one doesn't even have that much torque, it takes a while to start it, but it is pretty quiet.
