1993 Ford Explorer XLT
Hello, this is my first ever post, I am brand new. I am having a problem with my Ford Explorer.

Yesterday I changed the transmission fluid and filter. Everything went fine, no problems. However, after filling up to the correct level and going for a test drive, my 1993 Ford Explorer will not shift into 3rd gear or higher. It goes up to about 40-45, and I press fairly hard on the gas pedal but nothing happens. I came home and checked fluid level again and it seems fine. Can anyone help me please? No prior transmission problems before this for as long as I've had it (11 years).

The filter may be the culprit. It must fit snugly and not allow introduction of air into the fluid. I would remove the oil pan and the filter, taking note of it's "fit" in place. Also compare it carefully to the old filter, which hopefully you still have. If you do not have it, go to a different parts store, ask for a filter by year make and model, and compare it closely to the one you just removed. You may have been given the wrong filter.

agreed you need to revist the work you just did
Make sure the old O ring comes out with the old filter
make sure the new filter and O ring are seated properly

Fluid level is checked with the truck at operating temp in park on level ground. Checking the level on the dipstick can be an art form of sorts, you see when you pour the new fluid down the dipstick hole it is easy to mistake the fluid the dipstick touches inside the tube for fluid level. A nice clean wipe, do not let the dipstick rotate as you insert it, and learn how to read the bottom of it so you can see the actual fluild level, not the residue that it picks up on its way in and out.
What type of fluid did you install?
1993 explorer gets mercon III
NOTHING ELSE
I like Wix or Motorcraft transmission filters

I used Mercon V, I only drove maybe 3-4 miles for the test drive. Is this bad? Do you think I caused transmission damage? I checked with lots of different auto parts stores and called Ford dealerships and they all told me to use Mercon V.

Mercon V is backwards compatible so it should work however it is good practice to use what came in the transmission only

I took it to our car repair store and everything is okay!!! My car is okay!!! Thank you 410Fortune and IMP for your help!!!
