please help this is driving me insane!

All right, Ive got a 99 explorer with audio issues. Here is the problem, sometimes like about 70% of the time the stereo does not work. Some times when it does work a hard bump will make it stop working. Sometimes it can be working and when I shift out of park it will stop working. So I bought an Alpine head unit from a friend thinking maybe it was the stock radio, it wasnt. I hate this problem,does anyone have any ideas?

Probally some wires going to the power or ground source. Or it could be the speaker wires, or amps (if there is amps for your speakers)...

At the risk of sounding like a moron, how would I go about doing that. Ive never really tried audio work before, usually had someone else do it. I want to fix this one, purely cause its pissed me off, lol.

the next time is shuts off, stop and find out what is shut off.

does everything stop making sound (head and amps on)? or does something lose power?

then you can start pinpointing where the problem is and how far up the signal chain this problem is happening.

The whole head unit loses power, but nothing else does. I have pulled out the radio and checked the connections but still havent found anything.

Is everything but the radio stock??
when it stops working, does it shut off, and stay off, or does it just turn off, and you can turn it back on.

Everything is stock, I just replaeced the head unit. When it goes off it stays off for hours.

the only things I know of would be:

deck overheating
bad ground/power wires
problem with deck
speaker wires touching bare metal etc.

sorry this doesn't sound like an easy fix.....

I checked the ground tonight, everything seems fine. Ill check the rest tommorow. Thanks for the info guys. I got a feeling all be in the shop soon.

Well I took it to a friend of mine who owns a sound shop, and after a couple of hours we traced it back to one single fuse, lol. Ah well atleast its fixed.
