Please Help, wont start

Goodmorning gents. New to the forum - My ranger (read 99 mazda b2500) shut off on the connector bridge headed to work. She's got gas, and a new battery. The starter turns over just fine but i'm not sure that its getting fuel. When i crank it what do i listen for to tell if its getting fuel and compression? Any ideas on what could have happened?

I have no experience with your fuel system, but only experience with my 96 Ex. That being said, I would think there is a Schrader type valve on your fuel rail somewhere. If you can locate it, you can depress the valve core, it is just like a tire valve, and you either will have fuel present or not. Of course, be careful, I use a rag over the valve to catch the fuel. You don't want fuel spraying all over the engine compartment, if you have fuel pressure.

just get you a can of starting spray ,spray it into the air intake and see if it starts .if it runs on the spray then its not getting fuel .

also listen closely when you turn the key on for the whirrr of the fuel pump .if you dont hear it then its not working .

if it runs on the spray then you have a fuel delivery issue .you can try going under the vehicle and hitting the gas tank with a rubber mallet,plastic mallet ..some not metal object(dont wanna create sparks)and see if the fuel pump kicks in .it just might and then you can get the vehicle home .
we done this to my kids car and he got it home .sometimes its just a piece of dirt that can stop the pump ,other times its just near its replacement time .

The fuel pump is turning on with the key. but there is no engine sputtering or anything of that nature. its just all starter noise.

So, what is it doing exactly? Cranking over but not firing, not cranking but the starter is running? Your first description would leave one to think the engine died from lack of fuel, now you say the fuel pump is running, but the engine is not firing. Please be more clear on what is happening. Therefor someone will be better able to help you.

my apologies. When i turn the key on, i can hear the fuel pump turn on. When i crank it, it turns over but it just wont fire

Just got home and tried the starter fluid trick and nothing. moving on to testing the spark plugs now.

shes getting spark, but no fuel pressure. does anyone have a relay schematic?

If you sprayed starter fluid into the intake while cranking and it didn't try to start then you either have no spark, or if you confirmed that you have spark there is another issue. Not real familiar with the mazdas, but can we assume that you have a chipped key(PATS)? If it was a fuel problem it would have tried to start when spraying the starting fluid if you had spark. If you do have PATS like the Ford version then your problem could lie there. Theft light on dash would either be flashing quickly or on solid. Let us know about the possibility of the PATS so we can go from there.

went through the under the hood fuse box and my pcm fuse, and pcm diode are not getting any power. Any ideas? i already checked fuse 19 which correlates to the pcm system and its getting full power

no anti theft system, this thing is bare bones. power nothing.

where did you spray the starting fluid?
you should take the air tube apart either after the air sampler or right at the throttle body intake and spray it right in . if theres spark it should have tried to start on the fluid .unless spark is really weak .
take the air tube off right at the throttle body and try the spray again ,open the butterfly valve and spray some in there .then crank it .

Then either you have no spark or the injectors aren't firing.

why would i be getting no power to my pcm fuse or diode if it were just poor fuel injectors?

No, just the opposite. If the PCM diode and relay are not getting power the injectors won't fire.

Ooh. So basically the only thing to do is test around everywhere and find where im loosing current? to be honest, while i kinda get the gist of a schematic, im having trouble translating it into a visual. Could you give me a few pointers as to where to begin testing or what might be the main culprit of the power loss?

Use the diagram to try to figure out why theres no power there. The diode gets it's power from the ignition switch, indirectly. The relay power comes right from the battery.

from what i can tell by reading it, i need to check the pcm relay, the inertia switch, the fuel pump relay, and the junction box ground thats under the engine on the passenger side if i remember?
