I was wondering If someone can help me I need a new transfer case for my 96 ford explorer xlt 4 wheel drive and was wondering if it had to be from another 96 , I Was Wondering If it can come from a different year and if so do I need to change anything else such as the wiring harness I have tried asking around and cant get a straight answer it has been a couple months and the junkyard never gets any 96 explorers in, they always have different years so if someone could help me with this I would really appreciate it.

What transfer case do you have? Is this a 4.0? You should be able to put in another model year case. Depending on the exact model of your Explorer, someone here would be able to tell you exactly what. I'd suspect '95-2000 or so would be the same.

V6 or V8? Need to know

Welcome to this forum! Check the transmission section on this forum for information on rebuilding your existing transfer case. The main forum page has a link with specifications for your model year.

You have to use a 95-97. The 98+ are lacking a speed sensor in the rear case half you need.

Actually he needs a 95-96 only. The 97 t-case has the speed sensor he needs, but they went to the CV front shaft in 97.

If you were to replace the case with a 97, you would also need the front driveshaft to go with it.

thanks alot I have been trying to find out for a while now. but just to make sure the story is my buddy had the transmisson go out on him then he replaced it after driving it for awhile it started acting up again then eventually it wouldn't move at all none of the gears worked is there something I should start with first like a checklist tranny first, then t/c motor, then t/c thanks again and sorry for writing so much
