Welcome to the 10.4 mpg (city) club! I have an 05 Ex with the 4.0L V-6. Since last January I have replaced spark plugs (twice), the wires, mechanic said the coil pack was fairly new, fuel filter, professional Ford fuel injector cleaning, installed a K & N air filter, cleaned the MAF sensor 3 times, switched to Mobil 1 synthetic oil, and had two different repair shops run diagnostics on the engine, they can't find anything wrong with it and I cannot get better than 10+ mpg city. I have never gotten any CEL's either. It's just a pig! BTW, you lost me on the "carcass" thing, but do a complete tune up like I did and see what happens. You have the V-8 model, they tend to get better mpg than the undersized V-6's.

yea..i dont know why it says carcass either. typed that from my droid and it likes to make words for me. guess i should have proof read before posting. i also cleaned the maf sensor but not the mobile 1. what weight oil did you use? i was thinking about replacing the o2 sensors but there are 4 for like 75 apiece

Mass is safety! IMHO 10mpg is with it for my children! That said, I have an 05 v6 4x4... Get 14mpg. 10 is on low side, I'd def clean your intake, maf, TB, new plugs/wires, inflate tires to 32-36 psig, etc,etc...

Good luck and congrats!!!!

Just found your reply post here, sorry it took so long to get back to you. I use 5W-30 Mobil I Extended Peformance oil and the filter I used is a Bosch High Performance Oil Filter. I used a better, longer life filter and the Mobil 1 oil to go longer between oil changes, 5,000 miles, instead of the 3,000 miles using conventional oil. I wouldn't change the O2 sensors unless you are getting error codes for them. I had two repair shops do diagnostic testing on my Ex to see why my gas mileage is only 10+ mpg city and they found nothing wrong with the engine or it's components and couldn't explain why it's that low. Some people in here have said it's because of the smaller engine, type of transmission and the weight of the vehicle combined that causes this, but some people with the same vehicle get 3-7 mpg better than me. I pretty much have given up on trying to get better gas mileage in the city, not gonna throw any more money at it on diagnostics and I've already replaced all the tune up parts that I could to make it better. It is what it is, a pig!

I have an 02 4.6 V8 and have been getting around 10-12 MPG's in the city, I used to get around 15, but moved closer to my work by 2 miles. My truck never gets fully warmed up in the winter, I feel that is part of it. I can still get around 20-21 on the highway on a good day so I feel that it is not a performance/maintenance issue. Just driving habits and the where I am dirving (city of Chicago) that are giving me crap mileage.

But, because you just got this vehicle I would start by checking basics first. Filters, fluids, plugs and so on, to make sure they are new and clean.
