I Have a popping sound coming from my truck and Im not sure what it is, before I take it to a shop I just wanted to ask you guys your opinion,.. Its a 2003 explorer AWD, Its kind of a odd sounding pop and its not consistent its really random it will go a day without doing it at all then one day it will do it like crazy, its defiantly not a cv axle pop, I was thinking maybe it might be the transfer case. What is the opinion of you guys?

Does this seems to happen at a specific speed? Does it get worse when you speed up/slow down? Does it happen at idle? Does it only happen when turning? Does the Explorer feel like it slows down when the noise is present?

First thing I'd do is take both rear tires off and pull the disc brakes off to see what the emergency pads look like. It's very common for them to separate off the pad and can possibly be making the noise.

It defiantly is not the ebrake my explorer doesn't have one I removed all the ebrake components a few years back, It does not do it at idle only when in motion and its rather random when it does it it does it,.... going straight, turning, going fast, going slow, you name it, im going to pull the fuses to the 4x4 control module and see if it still does it

Is it AWD or 4WD? You said it was AWD but the AWD does not have fuses as it is on all the time due to the viscous coupling. If its 4WD does it do it in 4WD, 2WD or both? I had a popping that happened randomly that turned out to be the rear springs were broken.
