Anyone ever ported and polished thier heads? I am thinking about doing this later on, after i get an exhaust and a chip.

I believe that if you do a search on this site you will find some info. I am planning to do it to my blow up motor after I pull it and see how bad it is.

I get some of my porting supplies from these people.http://eastwood.com/ It really is a fairly cheap way as long as you do it yourself to gain some serious HP. I Like the idea of the exhaust work. That will let those heads flow. You don't have to be a rocket scientist but there are some basic guide lines to follow. Bigger is not allways better. What type engine and heads are you planning on doing? Off-road? daily driver? Both? emission laws?

Like Rookie said, bigger is not always better. All that airflow will hurt your low end torque unless you have something to make up for it. What size motor do you have?

This is really one of the last things you'd want to do unless you already have the motor pulled. On the 5.0, if you port the heads, get some headers and very free flowing exhaust. Unless you s/c or add nitrous, let it be one of the last mods you do. It's very time consuming too.

i have a 4.0l v6. it does still need to pass emissoins, and its for my offroad rig, though it is also a daily driver. i figured i would od it after i get an exahaust, bigger MAF, kkm, and then reflash the comptuer to give it more gas to go with the increased air. thoughts?

Bottom line is without a tottaly built engine a PP would be a wasted effort

Except on a V8. But yes, unless you plan on SERIOUS mods, your heads are plently sufficient.

I agree with spindle and BeauJ. I would do other mods to the 4.0 then P&P. On my project B11 which has a 302 V8. It was built for serious low end torque. All the parts were built for a rpm range from idle to 5500. The cam was what some people call a RV cam, the manifold is a non-egr 289 edelbrock dual plane,,again for low end performance. The carburator has adjustable secondaries so not to dump to much gas to early and bog the engine. The heads are the early 1965 289 high compression heads with larger then stock ex. valves and hardened seats installed. Back then they used leaded gas to soften the impact on the valve seats. Hence the hardened seats. What I'm finally getting at, even with these mods on a V8, i did not have a full P&P done, it would defeat what I was trying to do. If this engine was built from 3500 to 8500 rpms then a full P&P with other head mods. would be done. All I did was to match the ports to the intake and exhaust gaskets and open up some shrouded areas behind the valves. If I had just done the heads without the other mods I would have not benifited nearly as much.
