hey guys, i just finished modifyin my sub box that i recieved from my friend, and it had a 12" JBL in it with a small port... and i enlarged the whole that the port was.. .and placed a double quick disconects in it w/ a spot to plug in the neons.... but i also had an 8" RF Punch and didn't want to have another box taking up valuable space, so i cut a whole in the side of the box( the box is 16x16x8.5 ) and i built a divider and screwd it inside the box, so it is kinda a box in a box... and so now this box in which origionally had a 12" with a port, now has a 12" and an 8" without any ports in either region... my question is, should i port either region of the box?
thanx:confused:

I don't think what you're doing is a good idea, but here goes.

When the box was made originally, it was probably a larger volume, because it is ported. Ported boxes are supposed to be larger, sealed boxes smaller, relatively. However, by creating a box in a box, you've decreased the volume of the first, main box. You should leave it sealed. I hope you calculated the cubic feet/inches for the 8" sub. You should leave it sealed, too. How'd you get a divider in there? I hope the 8" is completely sealed from the other sub.

What Tim said.

If you look on the sub manufacturer's website, or in the instructions that came with the subs you will find a spec sheet telling the ideal box volume for the sub to preform its best.

If the box is too big or small, the sounds won't be good. Same thing with port size. Its a very technical science to make speakers sound right.

A general rule of thumb is ported boxes are louder, sealed sound better.

Actually, sealed boxes, if built properly, can be as loud as a vented box. But, ported boxes always have cleaner articulation and better response. Sealed boxes punch, ported boxes do all. Personally, I'm a ported man. I always go for sq over spl.

Hold up there u got the hole idea mixed up. Actually ported boxes can sound as good as sealed if properly constructed and tuned. Sealed boxes produce more SQ then ported and ported produce more SPL then sealed. Just thought i would correct you on this.

PORTED...i have 2 Alpine Type R 10's in a sealed box and i know that im not getting all that i can out of them...my opinion is go with the ported box..and get it professionally built so it right.

ported for better bass

sealed for sound quality

ported has higher efficiency
