Short, sweet and to the point: is it possible to add tilt steering to my newly acquired '02 Sport? I'm a bigger guy and when I let off the clutch my leg tends to get wedged between the wheel and door. Plus, being able to lift the wheel just a little would make it much more comfortable. I did a quick search and found pretty expensive options for street rods, but I'm not looking for expensive. Even if I could modify my current column and it still be stationary, that would be great.

Smaller, aftermarket steering wheel perhaps? I'd lose the airbag of course, but I'd be willing to make that sacrifice..

Welcome, and you can use the column from any 2nd gen Explorer, with a manual at least.

Most Explorers have the tilt feature, it must be left out of some base models. It's not too hard to R&R the column, just tedious and you are working in a tight space. If you do it, remove the seat to gain a lot of room. The seat will come out quickly with good access to the rear bolts.

I don't know how likely it may be to swap components of these steering columns. It may be possible to buy an automatic column and mix the parts with yours. I mention that because I need to do that exact thing myself, with a 93 column I need to remove the shift lever from(for an old Ranchero). Good luck,
