Possible heating issue? 2013 XLT

I don't know what the heated air temperature should be but 130 degrees seems very high to me. I don't know if it is the same as exposure to 130 degree water or not in which it takes 30 seconds for 3rd degree burns for most adults.

Peter
Hi Peter the temperature i measured is what is coming directly out of the vents. (Not the interior cabin temperature). My concern is the large difference in temperature when idling vs when driving.

Yes, I realize that but I don't think the air from the vent that blows down by your feet would cool down that much. Turn it off if you smell burning rubber.:D I've measured the A/C air but never the heated air. I leave my system on AUTO and it works great. I'll have to remember to take a thermometer along when I take a ride to actually get the engine up to its operating temperature.;)

This could be loose or leaky air hose connection between the manifold and the MAF. Just thinking outside the box.

I have this as well on my 2013 Ex Sport. OAT is 20F, on Auto with temp set to 72F, at idle the vents blow cold air. If I hold the accelerator down to maintain 1500 RPM the vents instantly blow hot air. Very frustrating.

Curious - did you ever take it into the dealer to address ? i still have the issue dealer says its fine..i think otherwise.

No. I need to do that and also have them fix the water leak.

...Basically its hot when im driving, but barely warm when idling/parked. Vehicle has around 68k...

Hi voltch,

Send me your information in a PM; I'll escalate this to your regional customer service manager (CSM) so they can assist. In your message, please include your full name, best daytime phone number, VIN, current mileage, and servicing dealership.

Let me know how things go at your dealership, Ben. How many miles are on your Explorer?

Hi sumzxr7,

Since you're in Canada, I recommend reaching out to my Canadian colleagues on the forum, FordServiceCA. Here's a link to their profile: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/member.php?u=233337

With the lower engine rpm's there will be lower coolant flow rate in the heater core with an engine-driven water pump. Combined with the heater fan being on the same setting, the air temperature from the heater system will be less, as there is less heat available due to the lower coolant flow rate.

Sounds like you are removing heat from the coolant stream faster than the engine can generate it.

Do you have the water temp gauge showing on the left display? If so, what is happening to the coolant temp while you are doing this?

P.S. Have you seen trucks and school buses and the like driving in winter with covers over the radiators? Or people who put cardboard in front of their radiators? The reason is to reduce airflow through the radiator to bring the temperature in the system up.

Ok i sent you a PM

The first thing I would try would be to turn recirc on to make sure the volume of air blowing across the heater core isn't higher because of the road speed. Measuring the temperature can also tell if it is truly a temp problem and not an air speed problem. A cheap thermometer in the vent can help you guys quantify what's happening.

For anyone using Auto: the setpoint for Auto is preset to 72*.
The system uses ac and heat to maintain the cabin temp.

There is no mention in the manual of external air being used to mellow out the heat temps when using Auto-it states Auto maintains temp with heat & AC.

If you set it yourself and its in Manual, then its heat only (and external air.)

So try to see if you are feeling cold air that is AC, or external air alone.

1 quick way to tell what is on or not - when trying it,
try it manually.

Try turning on Defrost during testing - the AC kicks in and it does not light up on MFT and isnt running as strong, but you can feel cold air in the car.

If you're in Auto im sure the AC kicking in is noticable?
(i never use Auto)

No difference for me. No control setting changes the cold air. Holding down the accelerator to 1500 RPM yields instant heat.

It sounds like it's low on coolant but I would think the Ford Dealership checked that...

Has anyone had their issue resolved? Ive been to the dealer twice now. Spoke to both the dealer and ford this week and waiting to hear back for next steps.

The only time I've ever noticed a problem was during very frigid conditions, i.e. -10 degrees and colder with wind snapping around making it feel even colder. Heat just could not get hot enough even at the highest settings. Perhaps the issue is ambient temperature dependent???

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks they are crazy. I just got a 2015 XLT, and the heat is very inconsistant. It takes a while for mine to generate heat, and once its been running a while, it still puts out low heat when at a standstill.
When its moving, it seems fine.

I'd like to resurrect this thread as my 2013 Explorer XLT is now doing the exact same thing - no heat when idling or city speeds, plenty of heat on the highway. Let me stress that the heat has been fine prior to this at all speeds, no problems at all.

I bought the vehicle from a GMC dealer two years ago and it did the exact same thing on my initial test drive. They fixed the problem before I signed off and bought it. Now fast forward two years and the problem is back. Unfortunately, I don't know what they did to fix it.

I didn't really see any solutions given for this problem other than to see the dealer ($$$)... any thoughts as to how to fix the problem???

X2 on bringing this back from the dead. Have a 2015 police explorer with same low/no heat at idle.

Outside temp 40dF. Left vent is 90dF at idle, rev it just a little and it jumps to 140dF in 30 seconds.

Both hoses hot at idle. Dealer said it needed thermostat, they replaced, no change, said it's fine. Showed them actual temps and now they say it needs a heater core. Seems odd with both hoses same temp unless it's bypassing internally. Has anyone successfully fixed this?
