I have a rear boot that's torn on the passenger side rear of my '02 Explorer. Stopped by the dealer today to check on price for replacing wheel bearings and asked about replacing the boot, too. They said the whole axle had to be changed to change the boot. Does that sound right?

Also, estimate for changing all four wheel bearings was:

both front: $898
both rear: $615

Then another $600 something to replace the CV axle/boot.

(Gulp!)

Anyone have any comparison numbers?

I had an estimate from a private garage to do three of the four wheel bearings for about $1500. (Only need three but figure I may as well do all four at the same time.) So the dealer has a better price, depending on what else they find while it's in there. Thinking about having them do the rotors also. May as well get all the pain out of the way at one time.
