Brian- how do you get 20mpg? i rarely take my SOHC above 3000rpms and i average a consistant 15mpg.
and no, that color combo isnt that rare, i work at a dealer and have seen it a few times, don't see as many 2WDs. Explorers go for a lot more than that aroudn here, so i think that price is a steal where it is now.
like i said before, i have a little experience w/explorers b/c i learned to drive a manual on my mom's 96 (def. don't want a 5 spd though)....if i remember correctly, she got decent gas mileage, especially because at the time we lived forty minutes from a major town
when i go look at it, how will i know if it is sohc? (other than someone else stated the "E" in the vin is supposed to be for sohc...is there another way to tell) driving it might not tell me b/c i don't have any comparison power wise
I just bought mine in January and thats what it averages. It is completely stock and runs very smooth. So far I have put almost 3,900 miles on it. The only thing I don't like is the tires are basically street tires (AW), but I do have the sport package so they are 255/70/16s. Check out my website for more info on my X.
Actually there are many Xs that get better mileage than mine. A lot of the 4X2 models around here do, if they are stock. Any lifts, bigger tires, or performance mods and your mileage goes down. Things like brushguards, lights, and roof racks all add weight and wind resistance too. I am sure mine will go down as it gets older and I start moding it.

wait, one more question:
when i go look at it, how will i know if it is sohc? (other than someone else stated the "E" in the vin is supposed to be for sohc...is there another way to tell) driving it might not tell me b/c i don't have any comparison power wise
That might work since it's a 2WD which will work to your advantage. Generally they'll go 2000 under their price right away without any trouble. You should be able to get them lower than that. Retail on that in my area is about $8,800.
thx he says due to the mileage it would be hard to finance, but that i think i'll be able to at my credit union...i was able to finance a 94 jeep g cherokee w/80k that was over $11,000 a few years ago...all i have to do is ask...
so, reasonably, what should I ask first? (a starting off point, where they'll raise it a little...)
That's hard to say probably $5000. Figure out about what the interest rate of the loan will be. And figure out the most you want to pay monthly. Don't forget to add the interest to the monthly payment. Figure what it will be at different purchase prices. A $5000 vehicle plus about $2000 tax and tags; plus lets say a 8% loan over 60 months; no money down will be about $127 a month. That's probably low for the interest rate.
Another thing I would do is look online at used car sites and print out listings for the same year Sport with similar features and mileage. Take them with you when you go to buy it. If they don't want to give you a good deal and you show them what you can get other Sports for that might help. Here's a page with a couple Sports like the one you want. They have 4WD yet are a better price than the one you're looking at.
Don't be afraid to walk out a time or two if they don't want to deal with you very well. Make them sweet a little. Tell them you'll go somewhere else and get a better deal.
You can figure aout $100 for every $5,000 borrowed. At least thats seems to be around here. Then you add in sales tax, property tax, tags, and insurance.
Huge tip right there, be willing to walk away and be patient. But you'll have a huge advantage if you have the amount you CAN spend approved already rather than pissing around with them dealer fiancing.
Well there ya go, get what your comfortable with, seem very intrested in the vehicle and when it comes time to talk $$ play the game for a lil then say well I have this much financed can you do it? if not walk away, always a better deal. good luck
