So i recently rebuilt my 4r70w in my 1996 expy, and i have a ratcheting, clicking, ticking sound in reverse while not moving and the sound is relative to engine speed. When I first started it full of fluid (having pushed some fluid out the vent hole on top from overfilling it and only one quart in the Torque converter before installation) it made this sound randomly in every gear. After the torque converter got full and a whole 12 quarts in the tranny it only does it in reverse. It sounds like it's trying to drop into park to me, but if i knew for sure, I wouldn't be posting here for help. Have a look at the video and let me know what you think.

EDIT:

Just went out to drive it for the first time. Until the previous video, I had only shifted through the gears sitting still. It no longer has the sound when sitting in reverse, now it does it when accelerating in any direction. See the following video:

1,

reverse is not fully engaged, and the clicking/ratcheting is reverse slipping. need to fix before damage is done to hard parts.

this is an installation eroor. bring it back to the shop right away. the problem could be with the shifte or manual valve or the cable itself.

try this. start car. starting in park, shift slowly through each and ever gear down to 1, then back up to park. Do this about 5-6 times hitting each gear. The goal here is to unbind whatever is preventing it from going into gear. Then try reverse again. Slowly.

Rebuilt it myself following the shop manual. Took the cable off the tranny to shift it by hand this morning. Its not in the cable. Thanks tho.

I'm starting to think I got a couple bolts in the wrong place in the valve body, which i did not take apart. The clutches got burned up from PO running out of fluid. (Bad front u joint wore the rear seal spraying fluid everywhere underneath. And, again, its only doing it now under hard acceleration in forward and Rev.

Sounds like the converter and or flywheel is hitting the metal plate between the block and bell housing.

JK wins.

Took the flywheel cover off, looked for bare metal on TC studs. none. Took it for a run up the drive with the stethoscope on it, but no sound whatsoever.... hmm.

parked truck picked up the cover off the floor. found bare metal.. looks like i've found my culprit.

Thanks for your help and suggestions guys. I'm now a lot more confident that I can rebuild the 4r i'll be putting in my Early bronco.
