well This plan is only in its infancy, but I REALLY want to put a turbo diesel into my 98 X sport. I'm looking for recommendations on a good donor vehicle.

I've been looking at some 3.2L turbo Isuzu trucks, but there aren't a whole lot around. I was also wondering if I could put in a 2 liter and be happy with the outcome? I know for a fact I dont want anything bigger than a 4.0 and I do want a stick-shift. and it will need to be 2wd for simplicity sake.

all input, good or bad, is appreciated. If I do this, its gonna be done right!
again, I'm not looking for monster power, just more than my OHV

suggestions?

Your best bet for engines would be:

Cummins 4BT (various step vans, ie bread vans)
Isuzu 4BD1T/2T ('86-91 Isuzu NPRs)
International VT275 ('05+ Ford LCF)

I swear somebody posted a link to some guy's blog where he was doing a diesel swap, but I don't have it bookmarked.

My brother put a 1.6L VW in his Samurai. It might work for a small Ranger but probably not an Explorer :)

i like the gm diesel. but your not really gaining mpg there, but fuel options.

best bet is to bootleg a diesel powertrain from mexico or south of there i you want a modern 4 cyl.

the benz engines are nice too.

i wish explorers came with an option to have a turbo diesel engine. If they did i would buy it in a heart beat

well its gonna be a few years before I get this going. I don't have my own place to tear down my truck and store it, nor do I have extra money to buy an engine for it right now. but I'm keeping my eye out for the right donor vehicle.

this will happen someday!

I'm liking the Isuzu NPRs, its a 3.9L turbo diesel. I haven't found dimensions or loaded weight, but it seems promising. I would love to be able to use the stock suspension up front if I could. I'm already swappin in torsion bars from a V8. I think that is my goal, no bigger than the 302.

I wonder if I should swap in a 302 first, just to get the feel for swappin engines?
it sure would be fun! did the V8 have a manual transmission behind it? I've only ever seen automatics in V8 sploders. then I could just pull a V8 driveline from a wrecked X, and all I would need to do is figure out how to put it in! :D

Land Rovers and Range Rovers over here come with turbo diesel engines. They're big heavy beasts and they go like stink so they should be able to pull the explorer... just a thought...

sweet! how come all of the awesome engines are from a different country?
How would I go about finding a used motor in Mexico?

I dont think
i'd go to THAT much trouble for this.

I'm still entertaining the idea of a V8 swap to tide me over until I can afford a diesel

my priorities (in order):
1. new computer
2. truck maintenance
3. economy car, some cheap to own beater
4. find a house with a garage
5. some sort of ridiculous mod for the explorer
6. school ...I guess.

Just a thought for you, Ford owned Land Rover for about 8 years, There's a possibility that they used the Explorer as a test bed for the TDV6 engine, so it might fit. The earlier TD5 engine may also fit. I think it's the same TD5 engine found in Volvos....

Didn't you say you're broke? :p:

Looking at Ford Mexico, the only turbo diesel I found (Ford Transit) is a 2.2L with 115hp and 220lb/ft torque, it comes with a 6 speed manual transmission, not sure if on older models there where other options

the older transit was a 2.5 Td....that's what my dad drives. Transits weigh about the same as the Explorer...

no they did not

well that bites!

is there a manual tranny that will bolt up? I wouldn't want to lose my stick-shift, and if I had to do some serious work to fit a stick behind a V8, I might as well just do the diesel swap
